Transcript: Charles the hawk

Description: Victoria LaFleur, CCCC staff, recalls Charles the hawk.

He really was a joy to a lot of the kids because they wanted to see him so badly. They had heard, see, word-of-mouth, that there was a hawk up there so that was a big thing for them.

And Charlie liked it. He loved attention. Anytime he could get your attention he was in heaven. He wanted somebody to talk to. He would sit on his perch and talk to you.

It was enjoyable to having him there and it was nice, it was just nice. It was something different.

He wasn't just a mascot. He was one of us. You could interview any of the students that were around when Charles was around and they'd tell you how they really enjoyed having him around.

Edited from the original interview on April/May 1981. Original interview available as part of the Southern Maryland Studies Center Oral History Collection.
