Samuel C. Jones of Calvert County was appointed to the College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees in 2014. A resident of Dunkirk, Jones is the division chief of Economic Programming with the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition to his distinguished career service of 33 years with the Census Bureau, he is active within his community and in developing youth leaders.
Jones joined the Census Bureau in 1979 as a survey statistician on the Decennial Process staff and worked on the 1980 Decennial Census. He later worked within the Industry Division and the Foreign Trade Division, working on data systems and the division's IT operations and services. He considers his most valued experiences, particularly in data capture, analysis and dissemination, as his involvement with data users and providers. While working at the Census Bureau, he has received numerous awards and citations, including awards for innovation.
Within his local community, Jones established and administered a tutoring program at Patuxent United Methodist Church, in Huntingtown. He provides leadership and guidance to minority college students through summer internship programs at the Census Bureau and he is active with the Black Executive Exchange Program at Bowie State University to help college students understand the importance of education, the expectations of the work world and how students can best prepare for careers.
Jones has a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's of education in college counseling from the University of Delaware.
