Advising and Career Services

Student sits across the table from an advisor

CSM’s academic advisors are here to help make your academic journey a positive experience—your traveling companions on the path to reaching your educational and career goals.

We provide close, personalized attention to help you map out your course of study, navigate the options available to you, and overcome the challenges you face.

We strongly encourage all students to meet with an academic advisor at least once per semester.

Whether selecting a program of study, getting ready to transfer to another institution, or preparing for your professional career, it’s easy and convenient to meet with an academic advisor. Make an appointment or drop in. Log into myLearning and select Connect to Student Support, or visit the Hawk Hub at one of the three campus locations below.

Academic advising is intended primarily for current students enrolled in either a credit or non-credit (continuing education) program. (Prospective students should contact a CSM Enrollment Coordinator.) Meet with an academic advisor for guidance or assistance with:

  • Registration issues
  • Academic planning
  • Advising holds or academic probation
  • Student support services and resources
  • Career guidance
  • Transfer preparation
  • …and much more

Once you’ve completed the Steps to Enroll at CSM and met with an advisor, you are ready to register for classes through my.CSMD. If you have problems registering for your classes, try these solutions to common issues or meet with an academic advisor.

VISITING STUDENTS

Below are the steps visiting students will need to complete to receive permission to register:

  • If you’ve never taken a course at CSM, an admissions application will have to be submitted and confirmed by Admissions. Once confirmed, you will then be issued a student ID number.
  • You can visit campus or call the Hawk Hub at 301-934-7574 to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.
  • If the course has a pre-requisite requirement, you must submit an unofficial transcript to the advisor.
  • If the pre-requisite is not currently in the CSM database, a syllabus will be required so that a Pre-Requisite Waiver request can be submitted.
  • After ALL steps have been successfully completed, you will be granted permission to register.

Options to Meet with an Advisor

Meet with an academic advisor by scheduling an appointment or by taking advantage of first-come, first-served same-day advising, on campus or by phone.

CSM offers four convenient options to get your questions answered and issues resolved: On-Campus Appointment; Virtual Appointment; On-Campus Drop-In; and Call-In.

  • Drop-in and call-in advising are intended primarily for current CSM students with quick questions. If your question or situation requires more than 15-20 minutes to fully address, a follow-up appointment may be necessary to continue the discussion.
  • On-Campus and Virtual Appointments can be scheduled through Connect to Student Support in myLearning or by contacting the Hawk Hub at 301-934-7574.

To ensure we attend to all students who need advising, when they need it, academic advising may be drop-in-only during periods of high demand. During peak advising season—usually about three weeks before and three weeks after classes begin for the fall and spring semesters—appointments may be temporarily unavailable. Drop-in and call-in advising enable our academic advisors to be more responsive to students’ concerns and make the best use of time.

Call-In advising sessions are a convenient option to meet with an advisor from wherever you are. Call-in is available first-come, first-served, by phone. To join the queue to speak with an academic advisor, check in to the Waiting Room through myLearning or call the Hawk Hub at 301-934-7574 to be placed in the queue. Provide your callback number when you check in, and an advisor will call you when you’re first in line!

During periods of high demand, wait times may be longer than usual. We encourage you to seek advising as early as possible, to avoid the crunch around the start of the semester!

Stop by the Academic and Career Services office on your closest CSM campus—no appointment required!
