About Us

Southern Mix is a men's barbershop chorus located on the LaPlata Campus of the College of Southern Maryland.  We operate in cooperation with the Fine Arts Department which provides facilities and other support.  If you are a male singer, consider coming to join us any Monday....every Monday night is GUEST NIGHT!

Barbershoppers....as we are called....are from all walks of life, nationalities, professions, and interests.  What we share is making the sounds of four-part harmony. We have men from all over the Southern Maryland region.  We sing in these general areas or wherever we can reasonably travel.  You can probably car pool with other members to get started.

If you love to sing, maybe haven't sung since high school or college, and are looking for an opportunity to sing popular songs, show tunes, patriotic and inspirational songs....give us a try.

WARNING:  Singing IS addictive and a lifetime sport!

Musical Director... Paul W Douglass II

photo of Paul Douglass

Paul W Douglass II began studying piano, at the age of five, in New Eagle Pennsylvania and eventually from professors at California State University, Grove City College and Eastern Nazarene College. He continued to study music by adding trumpet, voice, and bass guitar which gave him the opportunity to be part of District, Regional and All-State bands / choirs in Pennsylvania w

hile in Jr / Sr High School. Son of a respected minister, Paul had many opportunities to perform for the church and community.

Paul began directing his first choir at the age of 16, after receiving personal training at Grove City College.  He continued directing through high school and singing in local gospel quartets. He went on to receive music education degrees from Eastern Nazarene College, with a concentration in voice, and from the University of Maryland with a concentration in conducting.  Paul continued his studies with certifications in Administration and Education at Western Maryland College, McDaniel College, and Gratz College. Formal directing mentors included Roger Folstrom, Paul Traver, Paul Rardin, Robert Brown, Robert Howard, Brady Millican and Greg Larkin. Paul took workshops with master composers / musicians / directors Harry Simone, Steve Zegree, John Jacobson, Roger Emerson and John Rutter.

1981-1984, Paul went on to direct HS choirs in Ambridge, Pa and Somerset, Pa.  In 1994, Paul moved south to Calvert County, Md  where he began teaching at Calvert High School and Calvert Middle School. He developed the two high school choirs of eight members into the respected Cavalier Chorus which consisted of a Symphonic Choir, a Treble Choir, a Men’s Choir, a Jazz Choir, and a Madrigal Ensemble. These choirs consistently received superior and excellent ratings at festivals and competitions.

While at Calvert High School,  Paul was also the technical director managing the technical aspects of the auditorium and working with such names as Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Sabella Consort and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.  He was either the technical director or music director for theatre productions such as Damn Yankees, Brigadoon, Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Grease, West Side Story, Oklahoma, Godspell, and many more.

Paul began his formal barbershop experience singing lead or baritone with the Roof Garden Chorus  in Somerset, Pa where he eventually became the director. Once moving to Southern Maryland he took over the directorship of the Southern Maryland Sound,  an established barbershop Ensemble based in Charlotte Hall, Md. Summer of 2012, Paul agreed to take over the position as director of the Southern Mix.

Present and past  organizations that Paul is / has been involved with are Music Educators National Conference, Maryland Choral Educators Association, Southern Maryland Music Conference, National Educators Association, Maryland State Teachers Association, Calvert Education Association, National Jazz Educators Association, National Choral Directors Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, National Eagle Scouts Association, Calvert Optimist, Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet singing in America.

Paul is currently teaching for Calvert County Public Schools, Director of Music for Calvary Bible Church, and on the Adjunct Faculty at the College of Southern Maryland.
