Ethics and Warfare

Wayne Karlin offers several presentations including, Trauma and Recovery after War, Acts of Reconciliation after War and a presentation on returning enemy documents as an act of reconciliation and healing.

Adult Education/Continuing Education Opportunities

Commercial Truck Driver Training

Mary Beth McCollum gives the presentation that discusses CSM's commercial truck driving program. The program is designed to provide skilled drivers for the transportation companies in Southern Maryland and beyond. An average of 403,000 truck drivers, earning an average salary of $28,000 to $38,000 per year, are needed on an annual basis and employment opportunities are projected to grow even more during the next 10 years.

Construction Trades/Industrial Training

This presentation, given by Don Haskins, discusses courses designed by CSM's Industrial Training Department to meet the current and future construction trades workforce including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, estimating, welding, project management, surveying, blueprint reading and Spanish for trades workers.

Literature

Beyond Melville & Hawthorne: Bestselling 19th Century American Women Writers

In the first half of the 20th Century, the politics of literary criticism resulted in the bestselling U.S. novelists of the 19th Century being obliterated from the academic landscape. In the late seventies, scholars began the work of retrieving the nation's literary history from dusty attics and rare books rooms. This presentation, given by Dr. Victoria Clements, introduces the audience to 19th -century American women novelists and their work; it sets the literary culture scene, provides biographies and current resources, and includes readings from fiction. Participants can take part in readers' theater scenes from Catharine Sedgwick's Hope Leslie or Early Times in the Massachusetts.

African American Writers and Writing

Dr. Patrick Allen provides the audience with a selection of historical and contemporary writing including poems, essays, folktales and passages from novels by African Americans.

Who invented the hand signals for ball and strikes? The National Baseball Hall of Fame says it is controversial but many believe that it was William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy, a 19th-century deaf and mute outfielder.
