Spring 2008 Training Fair -- Coming soon, April 19, 2008 at CSM's La Plata Campus

Join us for two, four, or six hour training sessions. Look for registration brochures in March 2008.
 

CSM is an approved continuing education and training agency and offers a variety of courses and two training conferences per year to help child care providers meet their state requirements. Early Childhood Training Conferences offer child care professionals that ability to register for the day or for a couple of short courses. Choose the training that meets your particular needs. Parents are also welcome to register-many of the courses offer valuable information. Topics are offered in the following knowledge areas: Adult/Infant/Child CPR, Child Development, Basic First Aid, Curriculum Development, Behavior Management, Communication, Health, Safety and Nutrition, and Special Needs.
 Attention Child Care Providers – Meet the NEW State Requirements

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Office of Child Care (OCC) have implemented changes to both pre-service and continued training requirements for family childcare providers and center staff in the State of Maryland. Effective July 1, 2008 the following is a summary of new training requirements.

FAMILY PROVIDERS

Pre-Service Training

Requirements for any new family daycare, will include completion of:

24 Core of Knowledge clock hours, split into six 4 hour modules in the areas of:

  • Child Development
  • Curriculum
  • Health, Safety & Nutrition
  • Special Needs
  • Professionalism
  • Community

CENTER STAFF

Pre-Service Training

Requirements for new staff and any staff member moving to a higher position include completion:

  • For all staff, with exception of Aide: 9 clock hours in communication with staff, parents and the public
  • For Child Care Teacher-Infant/Toddler: 45 additional hours of Infant/Toddler training
  • For Child Care Teacher-School Age: 45 hours Child Development and 45 hours Curriculum
  • For Center Director: 40-45 hours administrative training


Family Providers Continued Training

  • For 1st year of registration: Completion of 18 hours, to be divided into categories:
    • 12 specified core of knowledge hours (four-3 hour sessions) in each of the following:
      • Child Development
      • Health, Safety & Nutrition
      • Working with Mixed-Age Groups
      • Emergency Preparedness
    • 6 "elective" hours: any other approved training
  • Each year thereafter: 12 hours per year to be divided in two categories:
    • 6 core of knowledge clock hours required in the module training track and
    • 6 "elective" hours: any other approved training

Center Staff Continued Training

  • For Aides/Assistants: Completion of 6 clock hours per year
  • For Child Care Teachers: Completion of 12 clock hours per year
    • at least 6 core of knowledge clock hours
    • a minimum of 6 clock hours of "elective" training
  • For Center Director: Completion of 12 hours
    • at least 6 core of knowledge clock hours
    • a minimum of 6 clock hours of "elective" training
