BUS 6460 Forest Conservation Qualified Professional Training (4 CEUs)
Tuition: $260.00     Fees: $44.00    

This course will provide training for landscape designers, surveyors, realtors, foresters, and others interested in securing Maryland licensing as a Forest Conservation Qualified Professional.  Topics for this training include conducting a forest stand delineation in full compliance with Maryland state law through analysis of forest composition from mapping and published remotely sensed data, forest measurements, quantitative data convention techniques, and basic dendrology.  Also included is instruction in the Maryland Forest Conservation Act and site planning which includes program history, law, regulations, forestry, ecology, land use, site design principles, construction impact mitigation techniques, and species selection and planting techniques.  Upon completion of this course, participants can apply for "Qualified Professional" status with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

            1.  Take quantitative and qualitative measurements of forest characteristics including size, composition, and structure.
2.  Develop a site map and a sample scheme demonstrating forest sampling techniques (basal area, estimating cover, plot concept) and tools of the trade.
3.  Identify native Maryland plants and forest types in an effort to develop afforestation and reforestation plans.
4.  Describe the pertinent information of the Maryland Forest Conservation Act.
5.   Assess forest and specimen tree quality.
6.   Prepare reforestation plans and integrate forest conservation values into new development.
7.    Perform forest stand delineation in compliance with the Maryland State Forest Conservation Manual.
8.    Explain the concerns over sediment and nutrient run-off from different forms of land use and their impact on the Bay.
