Oral Histories

The passing of oral traditions and history is an important part of human culture. The SMSC Oral History Collection captures the everyday experiences of families and communities in the Southern Maryland region. The oral histories are used by folklorists, anthropologists, educators, journalists, linguists, historians, genealogists and others to study 20th century life in Southern Maryland. These interviews were conducted during the 1970's to the late 1990's.

The UCAC Oral History Collection consists of audio recorded interviews, donated by the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions. The interviews are conducted by and with members of the African American community in St. Mary's County, MD. These interviews explore changes in race relations from 1865 to the present, while addressing African American quality of life, health care, education, and changing economic conditions.

For many interviews, digital copies and transcripts are available. Contact SMSC for more information.
