CompTIA National Security Preparatory Programs
For more than 20 years, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) has been committed to fostering and growing the IT industry by promoting industry standards, growing professional IT expertise, providing IT skills education and developing relevant business solutions. CompTIA has developed specialized initiatives and programs dedicated to major areas within the IT industry. They include convergence technology, e-commerce, IT training, software services, certification, public policy and workforce development.
The College of Southern Maryland offers two preparatory programs:
Security + Certification Preparation
ITS 2170 Preparation for Security + Certification (credit)
3 credits Prerequisite: ITS2800
ITS 7510 Preparation for Security + Certification (CE)
4.5 CEU's Prerequisite: * ITS7020 or equivalent experience
National Exam: SYO-101 CompTIA Security
Prepare for the national Security+ exam by studying topics including
communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography, authentication,
access control, external attack, and operational and organizational security.
The skills and knowledge measured by this exam are derived from an industry-wide
and worldwide job task analysis. Security+ certification is an excellent
"in-road" into jobs requiring an extensive knowledge of computer security. This
"hands-on" course is also accepted as one of the security specialization exams
required for MCSE: Security on Microsoft Windows 2000 or MCSA: Security on
Microsoft Windows 2000 certifications.

Server + Certification Preparation
ITS 7700 Preparation for Server+ Certification
4.5 CEU's, Prerequisite: * ITS8080 or equivalent experience
National Exam: CompTIA Server+
Step beyond generic PC repair and administration into the world of high-end PC
servers. Be confident when talking about the many features and technologies of
server administration and hardware. Make wise decisions about server management.
Prepare for CompTIA's Server+ Certification examination. The new, vendor-neutral
certification focuses on server hardware, configuration, administration, and
troubleshooting. Persons interested in preparing for this certification are
mid-level and upper-level technicians who are responsible for hardware
functionality of computers beyond the entry level.
