About Us

Since 2003, the consortium of Maryland Community Colleges has greatly impacted service-learning within the state by establishing three new sustainable service-learning programs at Carroll Community College, Harford Community College, Howard Community College and by strengthening and expanding existing programs at the College of Southern Maryland and Montgomery College.   With the assistance of the Learn and Serve America Higher Education Consortia Grant, five community colleges in the state of Maryland now have sustainable service-learning programs and have engaged 4,368 students, 254 community partners, 170 faculty members, and 20 staff in service-learning programs and activities.

At each college, curricular service-learning has grown significantly.  Each campus has created new service-learning courses, established a series of service-learning faculty development workshops, Faculty Fellows programs, and college service-learning websites.  In addition, the consortium has held an annual statewide training each summer for faculty.  This event has created a network of service-learning practitioners in the state that provide resources and support for one another. In addition, all consortium members have implemented co-curricular service-learning programs on campus.

Highlights include establishment of Leadership through Service Annual Statewide Conference for students, collaborative Alternative Break trips, integrating service components into campus clubs and organizations, Community Involvement Fairs, Service-Leadership Institute program for students, and enlisting students in service-learning projects on National Days of Service.

In an effort to capture the best practices, facilitate information sharing with the state, and encourage communication, the consortium of Maryland community colleges has created a consortium website, Maryland community college faculty listserv, and a service-learning coordinator group.
