Spring commencement activities at the College of Southern
Maryland provided the opportunity for the Flynn family to
gather and re-dedicate a tree in memory of Accounting
Professor George Flynn outside the Business Building at the

Latoya Jones
of Chesapeake Beach received an associate’s degree in
business administration at the 48th spring
commencement for the College of Southern Maryland. She was
one of 43 graduates recognized for achieving high honors,
(3.75-3.89 GPA).

Cheryl Toner of Great Mills was among the 109
candidates for graduation from St. Mary’s County at the
College of Southern Maryland’s 48th spring
commencement May 24. She received an associate’s degree in
business administration, which was among the third highest
program of study represented.

Carol Sprague of Port Tobacco was among the
173 candidates for graduation from Charles County at the
College of Southern Maryland’s 48th spring
commencement May 24. Women represented 73 percent of the
graduating class this spring.

one last moment before commencement began were, from left,
Maria-Goretti Uzoukwu, Laranda Tyson, Stephen Trice and
Michelle Smith. They were among the 46 candidates for an
associate’s degree in nursing at the College of Southern
Maryland’s 48th spring commencement. Nursing
represented the top degree program among the graduates.

The College
of Southern Maryland’s Faculty Excellence Award was
presented to Sociology Professor Dr. Maria I. Bryant, who
has taught at CSM for 17 years. She was recognized for her
commitment to providing her students with the tools they
need to thoughtfully engage in conversations about societal
issues that affect them, their families and their community.

The College of Southern Maryland paused
during its 48th Spring Commencement May 24 to
recognize the milestone of graduating more than 15,000
students in its history. Dean of Career and Technical
Education Ann Smith, right, presented balloons to nursing
graduate Kristen McVerry of Charlotte Hall. Since the
college opened its doors in 1958, there have been over
15,000 graduates and over 100,000 other students who have
taken courses at our campuses. We congratulate and salute
all of you as we symbolically present our 15,000th
graduate, Smith said. Already in possession of a bachelor’s
degree in biology/pre-med from Pfeiffer University, McVerry
received an associate’s degree in nursing and will be
working in the medical-surgery unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. |

County residents accounted for
22.5 percent of the graduate candidates. Heany, a corporal
in the Marine Reserves, served in
Iraq prior to completing his
studies at CSM. His time in
Iraq "was a life changing
experience, I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted
to do. I started to appreciate life a lot more. I wanted
to go back and enjoy life and play soccer again,” said
Heaney. “I decided I wanted to go to school and earn a
degree." During the past two seasons, Heaney was among the
lead scorers on the college’s soccer team which won its
first-ever back-to-back Region XX Championship. |

Christina

Government Association’s Executive Board member Nancy
Wickham, 23, of Lusby, received two associate’s degrees and
a certificate as well as earned the college’s academic
excellence award of highest honors (GPA of 3.9-4.0).
Recipient of the SGA President’s Cup, Wickham has
demonstrated her outstanding leadership and effort to
improve the quality of student life on CSM’s campuses,
especially the Prince Frederick Campus where she attended.
