The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) offers an associate of applied science degree in early childhood development, as well as a certificate and letter of recognition in Child Care Provider. All credits obtained in the certificate program may be applied toward the degree.
Because of the increasing demand for quality childcare and preschool programs, there is a growing need for people trained in early childhood education to work in this field.
The introductory courses, EDU-1012 and EDU-1013, meet the Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Childcare requirements for senior staff in licensed childcare facilities. Students who complete these two courses as well as EDU-1051 are eligible for a letter of recognition.
The degree in Early Childhood Development is designed to provide a broad background in theories of child growth and development. The student is trained to apply this knowledge in planning creative learning experiences in a variety of child care settings. Practical experience in a child care setting is combined with a broad background in the liberal arts. Students travel off campus to early childhood programs approved for cooperative education experiences.
