Student Testimonial

Ana-Alecia Stauffer, 24, of Hollywood, was the first graduate in the college’s Scholars Program. Stauffer, who graduated from CSM with an associate’s degree in history in 2007 and who attended the University of Maryland College Park for a semester, returned to CSM while saving funds to continue toward a bachelor’s degree in history. “I didn’t want to stop coming to school,” said Stauffer, who added that her mentor, Professor Christine Arnold-Lourie, is encouraging her to continue to work toward her ultimate goal of a doctorate in history and a teaching career. “She has been wonderful and has been responsible for my love of history.”

Scholars Program

CSM Presidential Seal - Scholars ProgramThe College of Southern Maryland's Scholars Program is a selective admission program for students who are seeking exciting opportunities and academic challenges. When admitted into the program, you will be eligible to enroll in specially designed honors courses. These courses will be distinguishable by the level of reading, critical thinking, writing, class interaction, research, and rigor that they contain. Students who participate in the CSM Scholars Program may be eligible for special transfer opportunities at four-year institutions, such as the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program offered through the University of Maryland College Park.

Benefits

SCHOLARS DIPLOMA

Students who participate in the Scholars Program will be awarded a Scholars Diploma if they earn twelve honors-level credits, earn at least a B in all honors courses, and maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. Students who earn nine, honors-level credits may be awarded a Scholars Certificate.

SCHOLARS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS:

The college, with support from the CSM Foundation, will award a limited number of scholarships for students participating in the Scholars Program. Each scholarship will cover the cost of one, three-credit class at the in-county tuition rate. The scholarship will be applied directly to the student's tuition account. Preference will be given to students demonstrating unmet financial need.

HONORS MODULES

Honors Modules, which are offered within a regular class, offer students the opportunity to go more deeply into the subject matter, and provide students with leadership opportunities.  Using a form developed by the Scholars Program Committee, an instructor may develop his or her module individually, taking into account the work of the class, and the interests of the students. Students NEED NOT apply for the Scholars Program to complete the Honors Modules.
