Academic Advising

Making the Most of Your Advising Visit

What is academic advising?

Academic advising is a relationship in which an advisor helps you select, plan, and complete your academic goals in a friendly and helpful atmosphere. You will want to work closely with your advisor to plan your program of study so you will take courses in their proper sequence to meet the graduation requirements for your degree program.

How should I make an appointment with an advisor?

To make an appointment with an advisor, please call or visit the advising office of your choice:

  • La Plata Campus - 301-934-7574
  • Leonardtown Campus -  240-725-5320
  • Prince Frederick Campus - 410-586-3056 or 301-855-1211
  • Waldorf Center - 301-632-2900 or 301-870-3008, ext. 2900

Whenever possible, call to make an appointment rather than dropping in without one. This will allow your advisor to prepare for your visit before you arrive.  If it is necessary to drop in without an appointment, try to avoid the busiest time of the day (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.) and allow plenty of time in case you have to wait.

How can I make best use of my advisor?

An advisor can be helpful only if you take the initiative to use his/her skills. Here are some things you should do:

  • Keep current on academic policies, procedures, and requirements by reviewing the current Academic Catalog, Schedule of Classes, and major requirements.
  • Understand college requirements.
  • Take the initiative to contact an advisor during office hours. It may take more than one attempt before you connect. Schedule appointments ahead of time.
  • Prepare a list of questions or concerns before each meeting with an advisor. Have a tentative written schedule prepared.
  • Ask questions! If you don't understand a policy or procedure, ask questions until you do understand.
  • Make decisions. An advisor will present you with options, but you must make the decisions for your future.
  • Know the academic calendar. Don't miss deadlines. Know when to register and drop classes. Set up appointments with your advisor well in advance of these deadlines.
  • Bring something to write on and something to write with.
  • Review your transcript. It is your responsibility to verify that your transcript is accurate and up-to-date.
