Did you know our Lead Coordinator at the La Plata campus was a Kid' and Teen College student, became a counselor, then an assistant coordinator, a teacher of our courses and then a coordinator.  That is dedication to our program.  Thank you to Sarah Massie for all your hard work.

CNA Information

Thank you for your interest in the Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant Program at CSM. We have outlined some important steps to take on how to get started in our program here on this page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 301-539-4778.

If you would like to have a checklist with this information, click here.

1. Obtain Student ID # and Pay for Work Keys Assessment Test

Complete and follow directions on College of Southern Maryland WorkKeys Test Payment Form.Write down your student ID# and put it someplace safe. You will need this student ID# to log into myCSMD to register.

2. Take the Work Keys Assessment Test

Students must go to the Testing Center to complete three Work-Keys® assessments: (1) Reading for Information, (2) Locating Information and (3) Applied Mathematics available in the Testing Centers on all three campuses of the College of Southern Maryland.  No test waiver is available.  The cost is $25.00.

Work-Keys assessments are required before you can register for the course.  FREE remedial training is available for those who do not meet minimum score levels.  The fee for re-testing any one of the three assessments is $25.00.  We strongly encourage interested students to test early.  Testing early will allow students to get an optimal schedule.

NOTE:  Each test has a maximum time of 55 minutes.  You will need a picture ID and completed WorkKeys Payment Form.

La Plata campus accepts walk ins - 301-934-7657
Leonardtown by appointment only - 240-725-5340
Prince Frederick by appointment only - 443-550-6040

Testing Center hours and information can be found at: http://www.csmd.edu/StudentSuccess/TestingCenter/

When arriving at the Testing Center, students will be required to log into the Work-Keys Testing Software to obtain a Work-Keys ID# (which is different from the CSM Student ID#). Please write this number down and keep it in a safe place.

3. Receive Assessment Reports

You will receive assessment reports from the Testing Center Staff. Did you receive a score of 3 or better on all three tests?

  • If yes....Congratulations! You will be able to register for HTH-6270 Nursing Assistant Fundamentals and it assigned corresponding HTH-6290 Nursing Assistant Practice course.
  • If no....Don't worry. Contact the Health Education Training (HET) department to schedule an appointment for advising and/or information on free remedial training so you can re-test at 301-539-4778.

4. Register for your Classes

Please note that students paying with tuition assistance voucher or paperwork and students using the tuition payment plan must register in person. Students who would like to pay for their class in full using a credit card can register online by logging into myCSMD. Please register for HTH-6270 Nursing Assistant Fundamentals and it's assigned corresponding HTH-6290 Nursing Assistant Practice course. If you do not know your myCSMD log in, you can get your information using the student ID number you previously noted by going to this website: https://my.csmd.edu/usernamepassword/help.html

ON HOW TO REGISTER FOR CNA CLASSES!

There is a mandatory orientation session prior to the start of class.

There are required healthcare screening forms and a background investigation which must be completed by the start of class.  Instruction/guidance on completing these forms will be covered in the MANDATORY orientation.  Students should expect to pay:  $48.00 for background checks, $56.00 for fingerprinting, and $20.00 for CNA certification fee.  GNA tests are covered as part of our course fee.  Required textbooks cost approximately $120, optional textbook cost is $39.00, and uniform shirt/patch/ID holder cost is $14.80.  Please note prices are subject to change from semester to semester.

Attendance for CNA/GNA courses is regulated by the Maryland Board of Nursing; 100% attendance is required.

Students should be prepared to turn in completed healthcare documents at the orientation.

The CNA HTH 6270 and the CNA HTH 6290 courses are set up according to the regulations set forth by the Maryland Board of Nursing.  CNA students cannot mix and match practicums because the regulations require all practicum students to have completed a great portion of the content of the fundamentals curriculum, and multiple medical/background clearances before approaching any live patient in the practicum. When you register for HTH 6270, please register with the corresponding HTH 6290.

5. Mandatory Orientation

1.       Students must have background checks completed to enter clinical facilities; instructions to complete the initial background check are also located on the website.

2.       Students must attend all class, laboratory, clinical and GNA Preparatory days to complete the program.

In the meantime, please complete the Required Healthcare Documents for courses with clinical practicums and bring them with you to the orientation. Click here for the Healthcare Information Page that includes these documents.
