Goal

Students will blend academic study with on-the-job experience. In particular, students are provided the opportunity:

Objectives

The student will read the assigned text and submit bi-weekly summaries on what they have taken away from it. The student will also be placed in a human services agency in the community where they will accumulate either 225 hours Co-Op or 180 hours for the Practicum.

Grading

The course is based on your work hours, employer critique, journal entries, and textbook critiques.

Course Requirements

Journal

A journal should be kept of work experience. This journal should be a bound journal and should be updated at the end of each work day. In each entry I would like you to include how the day went, problems encountered, what you learned, and what you like or disliked. This is actual log of your experiences and will help keep track of the professional training and experiences you take away from your job.

Text Summary

The student should write a typed one page summary of what she/he took away from the chapter. Please include how you felt about the chapter and what you like and disliked. This can be submitted by dropping it by my office or e-mailing it to me on or before the due date.

Book Report

The student shall complete a review of a book listed below. This paper should be four pages in length and provide an in depth analysis of the book and how you can utilize the information for your career in human services.

Kozel, Jonathon. 1989. Rachel and Her Children: Homeless in America. Ballantine Publishing.

Final Paper

The final at the end of class is a five page paper based on you work experience and what you took away from the course and profession. Please incorporate the learning objectives in this paper. It should be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, and be written to the college level. Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation are mandatory. This is due in my office by the end of the semester on May 18, 2006.

Performance Evaluation

I will be meeting with each employer time to time to check progress and ascertain your current job performance. At the conclusion of the semester, your employer will submit a final evaluation which will count towards the course.

General Statement of Academic Honesty

Students are expected to be aware of college expectations concerning student conduct and academic honesty as they described in the current Student Handbook and the college Catalogue. In particular, Plagiarism and other forms of cheating will not be tolerated. Students shall receive no credit on work samples when cheating is discovered.
