Description:
Pharmacy technicians are invited to learn about the preparation of parenteral nutrition. The definition of terms like hyperalimentation, TPN, and PPN and their applications in disease management, a review of the components of TPN solution and the indications for the introduction of lipids along with implications for administration will be presented. Critical issues such as interpreting physicians' orders and patient variables like age, disease process, weight, activity level, and ability/inability to eat will be covered. Aseptic technique and strategies to avoid mixture errors will be emphasized. Different administration methods and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be described.
