Gifted and Talented Steps to Enrollment

Students who are under the age of 16 and who have completed at least the 7th grade may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.  Students will be considered for such admission if they demonstrate the ability to profit from instruction based on evidence of gifted and talented status as defined by their local school system or thought other evidence of exceptional academic or fine arts talent.

STEP 1: Application
Apply on-line at the CSM website www.csmd.edu/admissions/apply.html.  Students are strongly encouraged to apply no later than 2 weeks before the semester begins to allow sufficient time for completion of required paperwork and to obtain necessary signatures.

Students need to print the last page of the online application for legal signatures and return it with the paperwork in Step 4.

STEP 2: Receive Paperwork from CSM
After applying online, students will be sent all necessary paperwork from CSM by mail, which includes:
- Gifted and Talented Form (sent from CSM).

- Instructions for testing.  It is the responsibility of the student to schedule the Placement Test.
Step 3: Testing
Option 1:  Schedule a CSM placement test date with one of CSM’s Testing Centers:

La Plata
campus
Prince Frederick campus Leonardtown campus
301-934-7657 443-550-6040 240-725-5340

Students must bring a photo ID to the Testing Center on their test date.
Students must place at college level in all areas (English, Math and Reading) to be admitted into the Gifted and Talented Program.
The placement test can only be taken once while the student is still in high school!

CSM Placement Test scores for acceptance into the Gifted and Talented Program:
Math: minimum Pre-Algebra score of 60 or Algebra score of 46
Reading: minimum score of 75
English: minimum score of 70

OR

Option 2:
Provide acceptable SAT or ACT scores to CSM’s Admissions Office:
SAT: 550 or above in each area (Critical Reading and Math) will waive the placement test.
ACT: 21 or above in each area (English, Reading and Math) will waive the placement test.  Composite scores are not considered.

It is the responsibility of the student to provide acceptable SAT or ACT scores to the Admissions office.

If the SAT or ACT score in one area is below the acceptable score, the student must take the CSM's placement test in that area and place at the acceptable level to be considered for admission into the program.

If a student would like to take any math courses above the College Mathematics (MTH1100) they must take the Math portion of the CSM's placement test.

Step 4: Return the paperwork
Please mail the Gifted and Talented Form and have testing completed (includes receipt by CSM of acceptable SAT or ACT scores) before the semester begins to:
