THREE INDUCTED INTO CSM HALL OF FAME
August 1, 2005 - Three new members were inducted into the College of Southern Maryland Hall of Fame on May 18 at the at the CSM Spring Banquet, held at the Waldorf Jaycee Center. The new inductees are Ken Barnas (tennis), Liz Estevez Mau (softball), and Bethany Brady (softball).
Ken Barnas played tennis at CSM in 1984-85, and was 50-0 in MDJUCO competition. He was Region XX Singles Champion (#1) and Region XX Doubles Champion (#1) in 1984 and 1985.
Liz Estevez Mau and Bethany Brady played on arguably the strongest softball teams CSM has ever fielded, in 1999 and 2000. During the 1999 campaign the Hawks were 29-12, and CSM was 38-8 in 2000, for a combined record of 67-20 (.690) during their time at CSM. The Hawks were MDJUCO and Region XX Champions in 1999 and 2000, advancing the the National Tournament both years. In 2000 CSM finished the season ranked 7th in the country.
Liz Estavez Mau was the anchor of the pitching staff both years. She was selected 1st Team All American in 2000, and led the nation with a 0.99 ERA. She was selected to the All Tournament Team at the National Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.
Bethany Brady was 3rd Team All American in 1999, and 1st Team All American in 2000. The slick fielding shortstop holds the school record with 68 RBI's knocked in during the 2000 season.
Plaques were given to each inductee, with a picture from their playing days, and a list of some of their accomplishments. An identical copy will be placed in the CSM PE Center, in a newly established Hall of Fame Section. Eventually plaques will be placed for all the other members of the Hall of Fame.
We caught up with each new inductee and asked them some questions about their playing career, and what they are doing now:
LIZ ESTEVEZ MAU
(Softball 1999-2000)
1. What did it feel like to be
inducted into the CSM Hall of Fame?
It was such an honor to be inducted into the CSM Hallof Fame. I feel like it was
a great end to my softball career. My family and coaches really put a lot of
time and effort into coaching me and supporting me over the years so they should
really be proud. I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them. Tommy
and Johnny are just great guys and they put so much into the program, it really
shows.
2. Share some of your memories from your playing career. What were the
highlights?
Wow, I just had so much fun. My most memorable experience was beating
Catonsville my second year. They were definitely our rival and I wanted nothing
more than to beat them to win the Regional Championship and to earn a trip to
Arizona. I don't think I have ever been so motivated. Going to Arizona was such
a great experience as well. IT WAS SO HOT!! We had such a good group of girls
and everyone got along so well. We were all in it for the same reasons and that
showed. We not only played together on the field, we all hung out together all
the time. It was
great. Another fun memory that I had happened my first year when we went
to Kansas for the National Tournament. We decided to surprise Tommy and Johnny
and "decorate" their hotel room (with toilet paper) they were not very happy. We
sure did have fun! One memory that I do have was my last game ever. We were in
Arizona, I think it was our second game of the day and I just kinda sat back and
realized that this might be my last game ever. It was kind of bittersweet
because you look back on all of the years and practice and I really felt proud
of what I had accomplished over that time. I went on to play a semester with the
University of Delaware, but it just wasn't the same. I cherish the memories that
I had in Charles County
playing softball !!
3. What has happened in your life since leaving CSM?
Right now I am living in Parkville, MD which is just north of Baltimore. I work
in a law firm in the city as a paralegal. I graduated from Towson University
with a Bachelor's in Sport Management and minor in Business Administration.
Somehow I ended up a paralegal so I'm not sure how that happened :) Eventually I
would like to utilize my degree and possibly work as an athletic director.
I also got married last year to a great guy. His name is Jon. We met working at
Applebee's in college. He is now an RN at GBMC in the Operating Room. We have
plans to move to Wilmington, NC within the next couple of years. He was in the
navy and lived in North Carolina and just absolutely loved it, so he wants to go
back. And of course I would love to live at the beach!
4. What are your goals for the future?
I would love to be successful in my career. I also would like to start a family
within the next couple of years (before I get too old :)) I can't wait to teach
my children how to play ball!! I would also like to someday end up coaching at
the high school level. My coaches had such a great impact on my life and I want
to do the same for others.
5. Are you still involved with softball in anyway?
Unfortunately I don't play on an organized team. My husband, Jon, and I usually
go out and play catch a couple times a week. I did coach a little last year but
was not able to do it this year because of my workhours.
6. Do you still stay in touch with any of your CSM teammates?
I haven't talked with many of them in a while. I really miss them and never
wanted to lose touch but I guess it just happens sometimes. They were some of my
best friends. I think we should have a reunion sometime. Maybe I will have to
plan that:)
Also just wanted to add that at the awards ceremony I forgot to thank probably
the most important people in my career, my family. I want to thank my father for
everything that he has done for me. He made me practice when I didn't want to,
he would catch for me
when I am sure he didn't want to, he really pushed me and helped me so much. I
want to thank my mother who was always there cheering us on, making sure we had
enough Gatorade, and just being very supportive. I also want to thank my poor
brother, who had to sit through approx. 500 games over the years when there were
many other things he could have been doing. He didn't like it most of the time,
but he hung in there and supported me all along. I would also like to thank all
of my coaches over the years, you really don't think about the impact that they
have on you until you look back at it. I really feel that they were instrumental
in shaping me as a person. I also want to thank Mr. Bill Hitte who once told my
dad when I was about 9 that I would NEVER be a pitcher. Ha Ha, he was my first
coach and thought that the sling shot route wasn't really the way to go. I took
his advice and switched to windmill. Boy, am I glad that I did that
:) Thanks, Mr. Hitte.
BETHANY BRADY
(Softball 1999-2000)
What did it feel like to be
inducted into the CSM Hall of Fame?
I was very honored to be chosen knowing there are so many great players who have
played in the program.
Share some of your memories from your playing career. What were the
highlights?
I have so many memories of the 2 years that I played for CSM that I think that
it would turn into the article instead of just being part of it. It was a great
experience being on such a successful team.
What has happened in your life since leaving CSM?
I have been very busy with life. I am getting married in September and in the
middle of buying a house in Millersville MD.
What are your goals for the future?
I just want to live my life to the fullest.
Are you still involved with your sport in any way?
I try to be. I play slow pitch softball for rec leagues.
Do you still stay in touch with any of your CSM teammates?
Not really. Of course I still talk to Angela Ellis but we were best friends then
and things haven’t changed since. But as for the rest of the gang I really don’t
see them or talk to them. I do try and keep up with what everyone is up to but
that is hard when you only see them every once in awhile. But when I do run into
them it is like when we were playing together. They are like my family and
always will be. I miss all of them.
KEN BARNAS
(Tennis 1984-85)
What did it feel like to be inducted into the
CSM Hall of Fame?
It’s a great honor, growing up across the street, practicing on the schools
courts, knowing coach Williams since I was about 15 years old. Then being
recognized as one of the schools best athletes was a wonderful moment in my
life.
Share some of your memories from your playing career. What were the
highlights?
Winning the region 2 years in a row, qualifying and going to the National events
in Ocala, Fla and Tyler, Texas. Playing a guy from PG college who was my ball
boy at the professional event held in Washington DC that previous summer. The
look on his face was priceless when he saw me and remembered where he saw me
last.
What has happened in your life since leaving CSM?
I have 4 great kids, a wonderful wife, Luanne, my own Home Improvement Business,
we travel a lot, we play a lot, we love a lot, life is pretty good.
What are your goals for the future?
To stay healthy, watch my children grow up and become successful adults.
Continue to travel a lot with my wife Luanne. Just enjoy the great life that
I’ve been fortunate enough to have.
Are you still involved with tennis in any way?
Absolutely, I still play competitively nationally in my age group. I have been
ranked in the top 20 in the country in the 35, 40 and 45 and over age groups. I
have represented the Mid-Atlantic in team competition around the country. I try
to help out with the LaPlata HS tennis team when possible. I’ve had a child of
mine on the team for the last 8 years.
I understand your son is following in your footsteps as an outstanding tennis
player. Could you tell us about his career and his plans for the future?
He plays #1 for LaPlata HS, won SMAC conference & regional championship as a
freshman and sophomore. Took 4th in the State as a Freshman, 5th as a sophomore,
he’s ranked #12 in the Mid-Atlantic 16 & under, top 200 in the USA in the 16 and
under division. He would like to attend University of Miami and be a sports
broadcaster.
Do you still stay in touch with any of your CSM teammates?
I haven’t seen any of the guys in a long time.
