CSM COACHING CHANGES
February 12, 2007 - The College of
Southern Maryland will be looking to fill two coaching positions, as long
time CSM softball coach Tommy Morrison has decided to retire after 22 years
with the CSM softball program (the last 12 as the head coach), and Head Men's Basketball Coach Brandon Martin
resigned after three years.
Tom Morrison
arrived on the scene of CSM athletics in 1986, when he served as Assistant
Coach to John Creaturo. Together, Morrison and Creaturo turned CSM
into a softball powerhouse in Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO)
and Region XX play. Before the two arrived, CSM had never had a
winning season in softball, only playing a handful of games each year.
From 1986 - 1994, with John Creaturo as Head Coach and Tom Morrison as
Assistant Coach, the Hawks went 143-64 (.690), winning five MDJUCO titles
and four Region XX Championships.
Tom Morrison
became Head Softball Coach in 1995, after John Creaturo left the area for
business reasons. Coach Morrison continued the Hawks success, going
286-133-1 (.683) in his 12 years at the helm of Hawks softball, winning four
MDJUCO titles, three Region XX Championships, and taking CSM to compete in
the National Championship Tournament three times.
John Creaturo, who
returned to the area and has served as Assistant Softball Coach under
Morrison the past ten years, will become Head Coach for the 2008 softball
season. He intends to coach for only one season, and CSM will begin looking
for a new Head Softball Coach in January of 2008, to begin coaching full
time during the 2009 season.
Brandon Martin
became Head Basketball Coach prior to the 2004-05 campaign. His teams
went 17-51 during his three years at CSM. Several players who played
for Coach Martin have gone on to continue their careers at four year
schools. The college is now in the process of reviewing applicants for
the Head Coaching position, and hopes to select a new Men's Head Basketball
Coach within the next few weeks. |
