BUTCH HOBSON FEATURED SPEAKER AT CSM
BASEBALL CLINIC

Butch Hobson speaks to high
school players at CSM clnic
June 5, 2008 -
The CSM Baseball Team sponsored a baseball
clinic on May 31 for high school juniors and seniors. The clinic
featured hitting and fielding drills, as well as bullpen work for pitchers
and catchers.
Butch Hobson, former player and manager for the Boston Red Sox and the
current manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs was the featured
speaker. Butch spoke prior to the 17 young men taking the field.
He talked about the importance of staying in school and making good grades
in order to follow their dream of playing baseball. He spoke from
experience, because years ago HE was the guy listening to a coach (Bear
Bryant).
Butch also stressed that above all else it's important to give 110% each and
every day. Natural talent will take you a long way in baseball, but
without the hustle to run out pop flys and ground balls you won't rise to
the top. Butch spoke of one game during his days as a Major League
player when he hit a high pop-up to an infielder. Rather then trotting
toward first and expecting to be out, he ran hard as he always did.
The infielder dropped the ball and Butch ended up tying the game. His
team won that game in 13 innings.
It was a valuable lesson for the high school students to hear, especially
coming from a former major league player/manager, that they can take with
them as they continue their baseball career.
