HAWKS RALLY FALLS SHORT AS CECIL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER

April 11, 2008 - The CSM baseball team rallied from behind, erasing a three run deficit twice to take the lead, but couldn't hold on and fell to Cecil 11-10 in the second game of a baseball doubleheader.  Cecil won the first game 4-2 to earn a sweep of the two games, played on a beautiful spring day with the temperature topping 80 degrees.

Cecil jumped in front early in the second game, scoring four runs in the top of the first.  Brandon Scott opened the game with a homerun off CSM starter Dennis Morgan.  Morgan then hit Dustin Ferguson with a pitch, and Casey Holland reached on a catcher's interference call.  After a double-steal, Billy Bretz's single drove in Ferguson with the second run of the game, with Holland stopping at third.  Holland scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Emroy.  After stealing second, Bretz scored on Bret Foskey's triple to give Cecil an early 4-0 lead.

CSM answered with a run in the bottom of the first, to cut the margin to 4-1.  With two outs, Warren Sollers struck out on a wild pitch, but reached base as the ball went all the way to the backstop.  Sollers came  around to score on Matt Oxendine's double.

Derrick Baker replaced Morgan to start the 2nd, and held Cecil at bay, pitching three scoreless innings.

The Hawks rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the 4th, banging out five hits and aided by two Cecil errors.  Matt Hoepfl and Pat Mahoney singled to open the inning, and Dennis Morgan beat out a bunt to load the bases with no outs.  Derrik Baker knocked in one run on a fielder's choice, and another run scored when Cecil first baseman Bret Foskey missed the ball as the Seahawks attempted to complete a double-play.  The next batter Chris Williford reached on an error, as the ball bounced away from second baseman Brandon Scott, sending home Baker with the Hawks third run of the inning.  Williford advanced to second on a fielder's choice, and to third on a wild pitch.  Mark Oxendine walked putting runners on first and third with two outs.  Kevin Mullins kept the rally going with an RBI single, sending Oxendine to third.  Justin Mika's single plated Oxendine, with the final run of the inning, and CSM held a 6-4 lead after four innings of play.

The lead was short lived, as Cecil scored five times in the top of the fifth to take a 9-6 lead.  With one out Dustin Ferguson walked, and Casey Holland was hit by a pitch.  Billy Brutz's single scored Ferguson.  Hawk third baseman Mark Oxendine was unable to handle Chris Emroy's ground ball, loading the bases with just one out.

Chris Williford replaced Baker on the mound, and gave up a grand slam homerun to Joe Ashley, giving the Seahawks the 9-6 lead.  Bret Foskey tripled, but Williford settled down and got Lenny Poore to fly out to center to end the inning.

CSM rallied once again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 9-9 after five innings.   Pat Mahoney reached on an error by third baseman Dustin Ferguson, and with one out Derrick Baker walked, putting runners on first and second with one out.  Chris Williford came up big with a 2 run RBI double, cutting the Seahawk lead to 9-8.  Williford would tie the game as he scored on Warren Sollers single.

Williford pitched a perfect 6th inning, striking out two of the three Cecil batters he faced.

Pat Mahoney's homerun to left center in the bottom of the 6th, gave CSM a 10-9 lead after six innings.

The Hawks were unable to hold the lead, as Chris Emroy and Joe Ashley hit back to back homeruns in the top of the seventh, and Cecil regained the lead once again, 11-10.

Relief pitcher Ralph Corey blanked the Hawks in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the win for Cecil.  Chris Williford took the loss for CSM.

The first game was a pitching duel, as Cecil's Tyler Bugna out dueled Justin Mika.

Cecil scored first in the opening game as well, scoring twice in the second inning.  With one out, Chris Emrey walked, stole second base, and scored on Casey's Holland's single.  Holland took second on the throw home, and scored on Lenny Poore's single.

The Seahawks added a run in the third on Dustin Ferguson's homerun to right center, and Billy Bretz's homerun in the top of the sixth put Cecil up 4-0.

The Hawks battled back in the bottom of the sixth.  Chris Willinford opened the inning with a walk, and came all away around to score on Mark Oxendine's double to the deepest part of the field, left center.  After Kevin Mullins flied out to center, pinch hitter Warren Sollers singled putting runners on the corners with one out.  Matt Hoepfl drove in the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice, as he easily beat the throw to first on an attempted double play.  Matt Nauman fouled out to the catcher to end the inning, and that was as close as the Hawks would get, falling 4-2.

CSM is now 9-14 overall and 4-10 in MDJUCO, while Cecil improves to 23-8-1, 14-4-1 in conference play.

The Hawks next game is Tuesday, April 15 when they face Frederick in a twi-night doubleheader at Laurel Springs Park, beginning at 4:00 PM.
