HAGERSTOWN TAKES DOUBLEHEADER FROM HAWKS
April 30, 2008 -
Hagerstown swept a doubleheader from the CSM
baseball team, winning the first game 11-0, and taking the nightcap 7-1.
The second game was closer then the score indicated, as CSM outhit
Hagerstown 7 to 4, but Hagerstown used the long ball to their advantage, as
all seven runs scored on homeruns. CSM didn't help themselves on
defense, committing 3 errors in the second game, with two of Hagerstown's
runs unearned.
The second game was a pitching duel through 3 innings between CSM's Justin
Mika and Hagerstown's Kyle Briggs. The game was scoreless through
three innings, and it looked like it would continue that way, as Mika
retired the first two Hagerstown batters in the top of the fourth.
With two out, Michael Knight walked, and Alex Stover followed with a
homerun, and suddenly Hagerstown was ahead 2-0.
CSM (13-20, 6-16) tried to answer back in the bottom of the fourth.
With one out, Chris Williford singled, and Mark Oxendine reached first on an
error by the Hagerstown first baseman. Kevin Mullins followed with a
single, loading the bases with just one out, but Justin Mika hit a sharp
grounder to the second baseman, who tagged the runner and threw to first for
the double play, and Hagerstown escaped without surrendering any runs.
Hagerstown (32-13-1, 18-4) got two more in the 5th, to take a 4-0 lead.
Thomas Evans reached on an error, and with two outs Matt Byers went deep for
Hagerstown.
In the 6th, an error and a walk put two runners on, and Hagerstown's Charles
Johnson hit a three run home run to put Hagerstown up 7-0.
CSM answered back in the bottom of the sixth, as Chris Williford went yard
to cut the lead to 7-1. Williford had a good day at the plate, going 4
for 6 in the doubleheader, and driving in the Hawks only run of the day.
Mark Oxendine, Matt Nauman, Kevin Mullins, Justin Mika, Matt Hoepfl, and Joe
Saverino each had one hit on the afternoon for CSM.
Justin Mika took the loss for CSM, as he gave up two runs and two hits, in
four innings of work. Mika walked two and struck out two.
Kyle Briggs was the winning pitcher for Hagerstown, surrendering one run on
seven hits during his seven innings on the mound. He struck out five
and didn't walk anyone.
In the first game poor fielding hurt CSM, as two of the first four runs were
unearned, as Hagerstown jumped to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Jacob
Darr, and Matt Byers had RBI singles, with the other two runs scoring on
errors.
Hagerstown would score at least one run in every inning, on the way to the
11-0 win. Michael Knight hit a homerun in the third inning. In
the fourth Matt Byers drove in one run with a single, and Roland Thiele had
a two RBI double. Another Hagerstown run scored on an error in the
fifth, and Thiele tripled in the 6th, driving in Jacob Darr who had doubled.
Pat Mahoney took the loss for CSM, giving up five runs (two unearned), five
hits, walking one and striking out one batter in three innings of work.
Spencer Cromer got the win for Hagerstown, allowing no runs over six
innings. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six.
The win keeps Hagerstown in the thick of the MDJUCO race for the
championship.
CSM will face two key games at Essex this weekend (12:00 PM), with a spot in
the Division II play-offs riding on the outcome. On Sunday CSM will
complete the regular season with a single game at Maryland (club team), at
12:00 PM.
