Journal 4 - Hawks Travel to Hagerstown and Rhode Island

Hello, my name is Jamea Waltersdorff and I am currently a student at CSM and UMUC.  While attending CSM I am participating on the women’s volleyball.  Over the next few months I will be recording a journal for the volleyball team, giving you insight on our season and sharing with you our teams experience.

This past week we played Baltimore and Garrett Community College.  Both of games we won and did it in three games. We played at Garrett on Thursday, so after that game we drove right to Hagerstown, because we had a tournament in Hagerstown on Friday and Saturday.

Our first game on Friday was against Wayne County, which is a team from Michigan.  They are not in our conference, so this was our first time playing them.  They are a really great team.  We ended up losing to them in two games, but they were really great games.  We lost to them 28-30, and 30-32.  The next game was against Pitt, NC.  We had played them previously in the season and lost to them.  However, that was a couple months ago, and the volleyball team has improved so much, so we gave them a little something and beat them in two. Then we played Hagerstown. The team we had been waiting for since the beginning of the season.  If I could express how we played in that game in one word, it would be poop!!!  We psyched ourselves out!  All ready and then bam, just like that we did nothing and lost.  I don’t even remember the score because I was so upset with my performance and that we didn’t bring it to them.  I believe that all things do happen for a reason and hopefully because the team didn’t play our game, maybe its was for the best and it will work itself out in regionals (where it really matters!).  Okay, so the last team we played was Garrett and we had just played them the night before, so we beat them again.

Well now that Friday's game were over, we found out our schedule for tomorrow.  We play Rhode Island Saturday morning at 10.  So after the games on Friday we went to eat at Panera bread.  It was delicious, however, some of us had stomach problems and gas after, and I am not mentioning any names.  Then we went back to the hotel to freshen up because some of us wanted to go to the Hagerstown outlets, as others wanted to get some shuteye.  Well, I forgot to mention previously on Thursday, when the team was traveling to Garrett and on the way back, we were teasing Michelle Ruble, our head coach about her jeans.  Okay, let me explain, everyone is familiar with the ankle tight jeans back in the day.  What we would call old mom jeans.  However, Michelle is a mom, so she is allowed to wear them (even though Michelle they really don’t look bad at all on you, we were just giving you a hard time).  Anyways, we kept messing with her and saying, "Dang, let them ankles breath." So Michelle was like fine you all are going to help me get some jeans this weekend at the outlets.  Therefore, Gary (Michelle's husband), Steph Fowler, Nikki Rieman, Rachel Olup, Katie Tyner, Janea Burt, and myself went to the outlets and shopped.  Katie, although was the main one helping Michelle at Aeropastle.  Michelle bought a lot of nice things and is now what the team calls a "hot momma!" Any who, while they were shopping, the rest of us loaded up on some perfume from the GAP, and pushed each other in strollers around the outlets (I know we are nerds).  Well, after that Katie had to go to Baskin and Robbins to eat some ice cream (just kidding Katie) and then we called it a night.

Now it was Saturday morning and we had to play Rhode Island and by beating them it was another chance for us to play Hagerstown.  However, we lost to Rhode Island in 2 great games (28-30 and 30-32) and we then called it a day.  We ended up staying for a couple more games, to try and get some information on the teams for regionals, which hopefully will help and make a difference.  However, the team could not just sit and be quiet. Our assistant coach Ron Swann felt the need to express his dance moves.  So Jasmine Jackson and him would break out moves and say, "You just got served." The two of them were on the bleachers at the Hagerstown game with headphones on, singing and making up a dance routine on the bleachers.  They were absolutely hilarious.  Everyone in the gym stopped and stared at them, as they did their little singing and dancing duet.  But, as Ron does his dance moves he said, "Bring it" to some of the girls and me.  Steph, who was one of them, said, "Well it has already been brought on!"   Then it all began.  The team then decided to have a "You got served competition."  The first team consists of Ron, Jasmine, and Janea. The second team is Steph, Nikki, Rachel, and myself.  The third team is Kimmie Patton , Virginia Smith, and Danielle Sturman (former CSM volleyball player).  The teams will be performing Friday (Oct. 28) night at regionals.  I will let you know how that goes.  Well that concluded the Hagerstown tournament.  The next trip is Rhode Island, next weekend.

Before the Rhode Island trip, we had two matches.  On Oct. 18 we played Harford and beat them in three.  Then on Thursday, the 20th we played Howard.  One of the best matches we have played all season long.  We had a lot of fans there, which made a huge difference.  We had our usuals (family and friends), CSM boy's soccer team, and La Plata High School volleyball team.  They were great fans and we thank you all so much for coming and supporting us.  Well, we ended up beating them in three and having a great time playing our last game on our home court.  Now that that the regular season games are over, Coach Michelle got us one more tournament in Rhode Island, where we would play Rhode Island, Genesse, Dean, and Holyoke.

Well first things first.  We met at the college at 5:45 am to depart by 6.  However, the coach bus was late and we didn’t leave until 7.  Not a problem.  Everyone loaded up and we headed up North.  It was a lovely 10-hour ride and we arrived there around 5 pm. So we got to RI and everyone checked into their rooms, got ready, and met down stairs to go to Newport, RI.  In Newport there is about 10 to 15 miles of nothing but mansions.  The houses were huge and pretty neat to see, even though it was hard to see because it was a little dark outside, but we always manage to have a good time and it was even greater because some of the girl's parents came on the trip.  After that we ate and headed back to the hotel.  The ride wore a lot of people out, so we hit the sack as soon as possible, as the parents stayed up and had themselves a good old time.

Saturday morning was rise and shine, because we played Rhode Island (the team that beat us the weekend before) at 10 am.  We played awesome with them.  The first match was ugly because RI and us were still sleeping and it was not pretty, but the match went to three games.  They ended up beating us in the 3rd game.  I don’t know what happened, we had them 12-5 at a time out, and then they came back and beat us.  Hard lose, but another game to make us a better team.  Next we played Dean and Holyoke, which we beat, each in two games.  Then we played Genesse.  This team is really great also.  We ended up losing to them in three great games also.  That was the end of a fun trip, so we packed up and headed back to MD.

I must say we play so great and really tough, but just cannot pull out the win against these really tough teams.  Hopefully it is happening for a reason and it will be our due this weekend in regionals (keep your fingers crossed).  Well, that concludes my journal this time.  Hopefully the next journal will be me including the championship and our trip to AZ.  Wish us luck!!
