ROGER WELCH WINS NATIONAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Tuesday, May 28 - Roger Welch shot a 71 on Friday, May 24 to win the National NJCAA Golf Championship, played at Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix, Arizona.  Welch, who had a 2 stroke lead coming into the day, shot 7 under for the tournament, and won by 5 strokes.

"His focus and concentration every day from Tuesday through Friday was phenomenal!" said Head Coach Danny Williams.

Welch shot a 71 in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, May 21, which put him in a three way tie for the lead.  He had 3 Birdies, doubled the 455 yard Par 4, 15th hole, (his second toughest hole during the tournament), and had 28 putts.

On Wednesday Welch shot a 68 to take a two stroke lead, which he would never relinquish.  He had 8 Birdies, doubled the Par 3 - 16th hole, and had 26 putts.

Welch maintained his two stroke advantage on Thursday, shooting a 71.  He had 3 Birdies, doubled hole 16, and 27 putts.

Welch shot another 71 on Friday, to win by 5 strokes.  He had 3 Birdies and 2 Bogeys, as he played it safe and smart to the greens, avoiding high risk shots.  He shot par on hole 16, and had 32 putts.

He was one of only 3 golfers under par for the tournament, out of 139 competitors.  His putting was excellent, as he missed only four putts from eight feet and in, and had only one "3" putt in 72 holes.  Welch was accurate on his drives, having only three shots all week that did not have an unobstructed shot to the green.
