C.S.M. Golfers Finish 2nd in Region XX Bannon and Masri Qualify for Nationals
Monday, May 6 - For the second year in a row, the weather shortened the Region XX Championships from 36 to 18 holes. This year’s tournament was held at the Wisp Golf Course In Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. The Wisp Mountain Resort Golf Course is one of the toughest courses in Maryland (course rating 73.7 with a 141 slope) under ideal weather conditions and with the wind gusting up to 30 m.p.h. and the temperature hovering around 50, many of the Region XX golfers had some of their highest scores of the year.
In Division II highly favored Potomac State College of West Virginia won the Regional Championship with an 18 hole score of 321 to CSM’s 337. Harford took third place with a 339 followed by Hagerstown (345) and Frederick (357).
Harford’s Dan Lynch was the medalist with a 76. CSM’s teammates Sean Bannon (79) finished 2nd and Jason Masri (81) came in fifth. Both Bannon and Masri will be competing in the N.J.C.A.A. National Championships held in Phoenix, Arizona from May 18-23.
In the 2002 Championships held at the same location in Phoenix, CSM’s Roger Welch won the National Championships by 5 strokes with a 7 under par 281 total for the 72 hole title. Roger received a full scholarship to Southern Illinois University after his championship.
The College of Southern Maryland Team of Bannon, Masri, Tom Eicholtz, John Price, and Dave Coleman defeated all 13 of the teams from Maryland and Pennsylvania from Divisions II and III . Essex Community College of Maryland was the Division III winner with a score of 350.
CSM. Coaches Danny Williams and Ned Spearbeck were very pleased with the team’s performance at Wisp. CSM was gaining ground on Potomac State when Monday’s round was cancelled because of the rainy/cold/windy weather. The regular season’s record was 6 wins and 3 losses with 2 of the losses to Hagerstown and one to Essex. Three matches were cancelled due to the weather. "Our players never gave up and that is why we finished with the second best team score at the Regionals" said Head Coach Williams.
Sean Bannon and Jason Masri were selected First Team Maryland JUCO and Tom Eicholtz made Second Team All MDJUCO. |
