C.S.M. Golf Team Misses Division II Wednesday, May 12 - Defending Region XX Champions, Potomac State College of West Virginia, defeated the College of Southern Maryland by the narrowest of margins 607-608 at the two day event held at Black Rock Golf Course in Hagerstown, Maryland. This qualified Potomac State to take their team to the National Championships in Goodyear, Arizona. C.S.M. was leading Potomac State 310-311 after day one. Frederick Community College at 313/304=617 was third and Hagerstown was fourth with 320/299=619. This Championship was the closest competition in our history with anyone of these four teams having a chance to win. C.S.M. coach, Danny Williams: "I was so proud of our guys because every player turned in his season’s best rounds under the pressure of having a chance to play at the National Championships." We struggled all year during the regular season with our best team score being 331 at Swann Point and at the Regionals we shot 310 and 298. C.S.M.’s J.J. Jordan (78-70), from Northern High School, became the Division II medalist over Brian Meador of Potomac State (76-72) with birdies on the first two holes of sudden death; Meador went birdie/par. Jason Masri from Chopticon finished 3rd with 75-74 and Billy Fritz from Patuxent finished tied for 5th with 75-77. Pat Norris (82-77) from Leonardtown and Josh Parrott (88-83) from La Plata shot their best rounds of the year during the Championships. Assistant Coach, Ned Spearbeck, P.G.A. Professional from Hawthorne Country Club, was instrumental in the team’s success. The players and Coach Danny Williams want to thank Ned for all of his contributions. J.J. Jordan, Jason Masri, and Billy Fritz will represent the College of Southern Maryland at the National Championships held in Goodyear, Arizona May 25-26-27-28; Masri competed last year at the Championships. Josh Ward from Frederick and Jesse Hoffman from Hagerstown are the remaining individuals to Represent Region XX. Montgomery Rockville from Division III were the Maryland JUCO Champions with the College of Southern Maryland second. |
