CSM Golfers Compete at Nationals Tuesday, June 8 - Billy Fritz, J.J. Jordan and Jason Masri represented the College of Southern Maryland at the National Championships for Junior Colleges, Division 2, held at the Palm Valley Golf Course May 25-26-27-28, 2004 in Goodyear, Arizona. Billy Fritz from Patuxent High School made the All Tournament Team and tied for 18th in the Nation with scores of 75-73-69-80. Billy’s third round score of 69 was his first round in the 60’s in competition. J.J. Jordan’s scores were 78-76-79-86 over Palm Valley’s 7015 yard, Par 72 Course. J.J. became CSM’s third golfer to be the Regional Medalist; he joins Larry Buckler and Mark Gandee. In 2002 Roger Welch was the co-medalist at the Region XX Tournament; he went on to win the National Championship by 5 strokes with a 281 score for the four rounds (seven under par) at the same Palm Valley Golf Course. Jason Masri returned in his sophomore year to Goodyear, Arizona to compete in his second Nationals; his scores were 75-85-80-87. Jason received the 2004 Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for CSM Athletics. The weather was in the 90’s each day for the Tournament but the winds really picked up on the last day and the greens were hard and fast with some tough pin placements; many of the participants had his highest score on the last day of the Tournament (including all 3 of the golfers from CSM). The 2004 CSM Golf Team and Danny Williams would like to thank Coach Ned Spearbeck, P.G.A. Professional at Hawthorne Country Club, for all of his support during the 2004 Season. |
