CSM GOLF TEAM TRAVELS TO ALABAMA FOR
NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Goose Pond Colony golf course plays host to
the 2006 NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Men's Division
II Golf Championship May 23 -26.
Some 16 teams and 38 individual players have qualified for the tournament.
The players will be challenged by the 6,958-yard Par 72 George Cobb designed
layout, which is immaculate condition for the four-day event.
Number one ranked Darton College of Albany, Ga., the defending national
champion, is the favorite. The Cavaliers won the tournament a year ago by
shooting a tourney record 28 under par 1152.
Brent Witcher, also of Darton, returns to defend his individual title.
Witcher finished at 12 under par 276 last year over the Goose Pond layout.
Teams and individuals, representing 13 states, will tee off beginning at 7
a.m. Tuesday. Sunday and Monday are set aside as practice rounds for the
tournament.
Former Auburn All-American and NFL All-Pro kicker Al Del Greco is scheduled
to be the keynote speaker at Monday night's pre-tournament banquet. The
event is to begin at 6 p.m. at the Scottsboro-Goose Pond Civic Center.
Del Greco is now head golf coach and an assistant football coach at Spain
Park High School in Birmingham, Ala. His golf teams finished as runner-up in
the Alabama state championships in 2004 and 2005. They came in third in
2006, with Del Greco's son, Trey, finishing as medalist.
Golfers will enjoy a long drive contest on Tuesday night. The event, slated
to start at 6 p.m. will feature one player from each school. It is
sponsored by the SBC (Small Business Council), a local organization of
business people.
Wal-Mart will sponsor a fishing contest for the players and coaches after
Wednesday's action. The ponds on the course, which contain largemouth bass,
crappie, bream, bluegill and catfish, will be used by the participants with
fun sure to be had by all.
