CSM Golf Team Wins Region XX Championship by 1 Stroke

May 10, 2006 - The 36 hole Region XX Championship was held at the Beaver Creek Country Club in Hagerstown, Maryland on May 8 & 9, 2006. The College of Southern Maryland Golf Team edged the Harford Owls by a single stroke on the final day 665 to 666.

After the first day of play in light rain (May 8), Harford was leading CSM by 8 strokes (339-347). Matt Wagner of CSM and Matt Chavis of Harford both shot 80 for the low rounds of the first day.

On the final day of play, the CSM Hawks played their finest competitive round of the year by improving 29 strokes over day 1: Matt Wagner (80-74), Brian Beavan (85-75), Alan Mattingly (92-81), R.J. Persetic (90-88), and Josh Humphrey (95-93). On the final day, after 3 of the 4 scores were posted, Harford still held an 8 stroke advantage while the players, coaches and fans waited 30 minutes for the final threesome to finish the 18th hole. Matt Wagner’s 74 won him the Regional Medalist award (by 6 strokes) and Harford’s Chavis posted an 83. CSM’s Brian Beavan’s 75 on the final day gave him second place in the Tournament.

Coaches Ned Spearbeck and Danny Williams of CSM were very pleased with the undefeated regular season (10-0), the Maryland JUCO Championship and the Region XX Championship. We know how the Harford players feel because Potomac State from West Virginia defeated CSM by one stroke @ the 2004 Region XX Championships.

The CSM Team will now compete at the 72 hole National Junior College Championships for Division II at the Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro, Alabama May 23-24-25-26, 2006. Joining the Hawks at the Nationals will be Harford’s David Pennington and Matt Chavis, Frederick’s Pat Clark, Allegheny of Pittsburg’s Jordan Hobbs and the 2005 Region XX Medalist from Hagerstown: Chris Breed.
