GOLF WINS OPENER
April 2, 2007 -
The CSM Golf Team opened the 2007 season with
some impressive play, as they defeated Hagerstown 319-393 at Hawthorne
Country Club. Hawthorne is a short course with hazards and/or
out-of-bounds on all 18 holes, and features very large greens.
The greens had been aerated, or punched, this week, which made putting very
treacherous for both the CSM and Hagerstown players. CSM Head Coach
Danny Williams stated:
"Our first match had the highest number of birdies, 15,
in my 19 years of coaching golf. The nine players also had at least
double that number of three putts on the rough greens."
Matt Wagner, CSM's #1 player, was the medalist (lowest round) with a score
of 73. Pat Hibben (81), Matt Gribble (82), and Vinnie Hancock (83)
finished the Hawk scoring for a total of 319. Returning sophomore R.J.
Persetic, CSM's fifth player, was five over par on the front nine when he
left the match for his afternoon classes.
The Hawks travel to Montgomery County to play Rockville, one of the top
Division III Maryland JUCO colleges on Thursday, April 5.
