MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

August 23, 2010 - The men's basketball team will open the season in the Hall of Fame game Nov. 6, to be played at Anne Arundel at 4:00 PM.  The Hawks were selected as CSM men's soccer player David Hayes, as well as softball player Elizabeth Estevez-Mau will be inducted into the MDJUCO Hall of Fame this fall.  The women's basketball team will play at 2:00 PM against Hagerstown, also at Anne Arundel.

After trips to North Carolina, West Virginia, and two conference games, the Hawks will open their home season on Dec. 1 against Frederick at 7:00 PM.  CSM will play all five of their games in December in the friendly confines of the "Hawks Nest".  CSM will also face defending Region XX Champion Cecil on Feb. 5 at Cecil. 2010 SPRING BANQUET

May 14, 2010 - The College of Southern Maryland hosted their annual Spring Athletic Banquet on May 5, 2010 at the Jaycee Center in Waldorf, Md.  The annual banquet serves as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of all of the athletes and coaches for the past academic year. 

Several major awards were presented:

Male Athlete of the Year - James Newsome (Baseball)
As a member of the baseball team, James batted .350. with 16 doubles, 4 triples, 6 homeruns, and 60 RBI's.  He excelled in the classroom as well, and his GPA was second only to the Scholar Athlete of the Year. 

Female Athlete of the Year - Ashley Wolfe (Volleyball)
Ashley excelled both on and off the court.  Her statistics on the volleyball court were impressive, as she was 6th in the conference in blocks, and 8th in the nation in hitting efficiency (44 %).  She was 1st Team All Conference, 1st Team All Region, and Honorable Mention All American.   Despite a torn ACL, she led the team to the Region Championship game.  Her GPA was 3.16, and she is listed in Who's Who Among College Students.

Wings of the Hawk - Ron Mann (Compliance Officer)
With the athletic department short staffed, Ron stepped up to help out, going well beyond his normal duties.  He volunteered to run the scoreboard at all home basketball games, as well as serve as Athletic Administrator at many home events, ensuring there would be an administrator at all games.

Scholar Athlete of the Year - Nicole Ladue (Women's soccer)
Nicole was a hard worker both on and off the field.  She played defensive midfield for the women's soccer team, and although her primary role was defense, she scored 4 goals (3 game winners), and had 2 assists.  Her GPA was an outstanding 3.757.

Hall of Fame - Jerry Michael - Baseball 1972-73
Jerry's pitching record over his two year career as a member of the CSM baseball team was 12-3.  He was Pitching MVP in 1972-73, and led the Hawks to two Region XX Championships.  He was Second Team All MDJUCO in both 1972 and 1973.

2008-09 Sportsmanship Award - Award given annually by a vote of Athletic Directors to the school that displays the most sportsmanship in hosting events. (complete list of award winners and photo gallery)

ROB SHANNON SELECTED 1st TEAM ALL MDJUCO

March 5, 2010 - CSM men's basketball player Rob Shannon has been selected 1st Team All MDJUCO.  Shannon led the conference in scoring with a 23.0 average, and led the Hawks in field goal percentage (54.5), and rebounds (6.3) as well.

HAWKS TO FACE BALTIMORE AGAIN IN REGION XX TOURNAMENT

February 22, 2010 - The men's basketball team will face Baltimore one more time, as the two teams will face off again in the first round of the Region XX Tournament this Friday at Hagerstown.  Tip-off is at 3:00 PM.  The Hawks have face the Panthers twice this season, winning a 67-66 thriller in early January, and then falling 87-76 last week in the first round of the MDJUCO Tournament.  Baltimore then went on to win the MDJUCO Tournament. 

The winner of the CSM - Baltimore game will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1:00 PM, where they will face the winner of the Beaver - Howard game.

PANTHERS KNOCK HAWKS OUT OF MDJUCO TOURNAMENT

February 17, 2010 - It had been a long time since the CSM men's basketball team had hosted a home play-off game, at least 10 years, and while the team was excited to be playing at home, they were disappointed by the result, a 87-76 defeat by Baltimore, eliminating them from the tournament. CSM TO HOST 1st ROUND PLAY-OFF GAME

February 15, 2010 - The CSM men's basketball team has been seeded 8th in the MDJUCO tournament, and will host a first round game against Baltimore on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 PM.  The winner will advance to face top seeded Cecil on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 PM at Prince George's Community College.

HAWKS SURVIVE SCARE TO DEFEAT ROCKVILLE IN OVERTIME

January 29, 2010 - The men's basketball team let a 13 point lead evaporate in the last six minutes of the game, then rallied to defeat Rockville in overtime 95-84. (more)

SHANNON AND POSEY LEAD HAWKS TO VICTORY OVER HARFORD; LADY HAWKS FALL TO OWLS

January 23, 2010 -BEL AIR, Md.Five players scored 20+ points during the Harford men's and women's basketball doubleheader against the College of Southern Maryland on Saturday as the women Fighting Owls (5-12, 2-7) earned a 57-40 win over the Hawks (1-11, 0-5 MDJUCO) and the men Fighting Owls (11-7, 5-5 MDJUCO) fell to the Hawks (9-8, 6-4 MDJUCO), 104-94.

Freshmen Alanza Brown (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) and Denard Dickens (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) tallied 26 and 21 points, respectively for the Fighting Owls and Ashley Farmer totaled 21 points for the Hawk women, but Rob Shannon and Devin Posey stole the show on Saturday as they posted 44- and 32-point totals in the Hawks' victory over the Harford men. CSM GIVES CECIL A SCARE BEFORE FALLING TO #7 SEAHAWKS

January 20, 2010 - The CSM men's basketball team gave the 7th ranked team in the country a scare, trailing by only four, 58-54, with 8:35 left to play, before falling to #7 Cecil 81-64.  Cecil remains undefeated in MDJUCO play (10-0), and has only one loss overall (16-1).  The Hawks are 8-8 overall, and 5-4 in MDJUCO. NOVA MEN STUMBLE AGAINST SOUTHERN MARYLAND

ANNANDALE, VA (January 13, 2010) – Devin Posey scored 38 points to lead a shorthanded College of Southern Maryland team to a 80-68 victory over Northern Virginia Community College Wednesday evening at the Ernst Cultural Center gymnasium. (more)

MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS BALTIMORE FOR 5th WIN IN A ROW

January 6, 2010 - Aaron Gwynn hit a long fade away three pointer with 2.9 seconds left in the game, to give CSM a 67-66 win over Baltimore.  It capped an exciting final ten minutes of the game, that saw five ties and two lead changes. (more)

HAWKS DEFEAT CATONSVILLE FOR 4th WIN IN A ROW

December 16, 2009 - The CSM men's basketball team defeated a pesky Catonsville squad 86-75, for their fourth win in a row.  Thomas Young led the CSM attack with 35 points, and Devin Posey had 20 points.  The Hawks have evened their record at 5-5, and improve to 4-1 in conference play. MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS P.G. TO EVEN CONFERENCE RECORD

November 24, 2009 - The CSM men's basketball team played their best half of the season, as they raced to a 42-23 halftime lead over Prince George's.  The Hawks offense was executing on all cylinders, as CSM combined hot shooting and a fast breaking offense to run away from the Owls.  When forced to slow down, the Hawks made good decisions in their set offense. FALCONS FLY PAST HAWKS

November 16, 2009 - The Lackawanna Falcons defeated the CSM Hawks 80-73 in a men's basketball game played in the Hawks Nest at CSM.  It was a game of surges, with both teams going on scoring runs, but in the end Lackawanna built up too big of a lead for the Hawks to overcome. (more)

CAPE FEAR DEFEATS HAWKS IN CSM TOURNAMENT FINAL

November 16, 2009 - In the championship game of the CSM Tournament, Cape Fear defeated CSM 92-83.  While the first half was tight, the Sea Devils were able to build a 11 point lead at halftime, 45-34.  The Hawks made several runs in the second half, but Cape Fear came up with a clutch basket every time, and the closest the Hawks were able to cut the margin was to four points, late in the game.  Thomas Young and Rob Shannon were selected to the All-Tournament team for CSM, while Nick Jefferson was selected for Cape Fear, and Richard Shepherd of Cape Fear was the Tournament MVP. MEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON NOV. 10

October 19, 2009 - The men's basketball team will open the season on November 10, when they travel to Frederick for a MDJUCO game.  The team will open the home schedule when they host the CSM Tournament, Nov. 13 and 14.  The Hawks will host two teams that finished in the top 15 last year, Cecil (#2) on Jan. 20, and Lackawana (#14) on Nov. 16.
