MEN'S
BASKETBALL TO HOST FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF GAME
TUESDAY, FEB. 18
Monday, February
18 - The Hawks defeated Germantown 92-69 on Saturday, February
16. With the victory, CSM (16-10, 9-8) locked up 8th place in the MDJUCO
Conference and ensured themselves a home playoff game vs. 9th seed
Chesapeake. The game will be played on Tuesday, February 19 at 8:00 PM in
the Hawks Nest on the CSM campus.
CSM and Chesapeake have played twice already this season,
with Chesapeake winning on a shot at the buzzer 70-69 in December on their home
court, and the Hawks returning the favor with a thrilling 77-74 come from behind
victory in the Hawks Nest last month. The teams will likely meet for a
fourth time in the first round of the Region XX Tournament.
Chesapeake is coached by former CSM coach John Mappas. Mappas coached at CSM from 1983-84 through the 1986-87 season compiling a record of 100 - 23 during that span, winning 3 Maryland State Titles and 2 Region XX Championships.
Germantown jumped out to an early 14-2 lead Saturday, and it looked like the playoff game might be at Chesapeake. However the Hawks went on two mini-runs in the first half to take a 44-34 halftime lead. CSM never looked back in cruising to the 23 point victory.
Wayne Gibson lead the Hawks with 34 points and 21 rebounds. Steve Rapp added 26 points, including six 3-pointers.
The winner of the CSM - Chesapeake game will play the winner of #1 Allegany vs. #16 Howard. That game will be played on Friday, February 22, at 5:00 PM, at Frederick. As this year's host, Frederick will host all the remaining tournament games.
