SKIPJACKS KNOCK HAWKS OUT OF MARYLAND JUCO TOURNAMENT
Tuesday, February 19 - In another nail biter that went down to the wire, Chesapeake defeated CSM 75-69 in a first round Maryland JUCO playoff game. The two teams have played three games that have been decided by a total of 10 points, with Chesapeake winning two of the three.
This time it was the Hawks who jumped on top early, stretching their lead to as much as 6 points in the first half. The Skipjacks rallied however to take a 41-38 halftime lead. Darrell Smith dominated inside for Chesapeake, scoring 12 of his 13 points in the first half.
Chesapeake stretched their lead in the second half to as much as 9 points, before the Hawks rallied to cut the lead to 4 with under 5:00 left. CSM had the ball three times with a chance to cut the lead to 2, but was unable to convert. Wayne Gibson lead the Hawk charge, scoring 13 of his 20 points down the stretch. Charlie Ware had 12 second half (15 total) and Larry Henson added 10 (12 total) to pace Chesapeake.
The Skipjacks advance to the second round of the MDJUCO tournament, where they will play the winner of the game between Allegany and Howard. That game will take place at Frederick at 5:00 PM on Friday.
CSM falls to 16-11 for the season. The Hawks will compete in the Region XX Tournament next week, where they could face Chesapeake for a 4th time this season. Check the CSM hotline or Athletic Website for the date and time of the first round game.
