HAWKS WITHSTAND LATE CHARGE FROM GERMANTOWN, WIN FIRST CONFERENCE GAME

Saturday, January 18 - After leading by as much as 16 points, CSM withstood a furious charge from Germantown to win their first MDJUCO game 74-66.  Germantown battled back to tie the game twice, but could never take the lead, as the Hawks had the answer to every Gryphon rally.

The game was tight early, and was tied at 11-11 with 12:00 left in the first half.  Then CSM (2-16, 1-9) went on a 16-0 run, on the way to a 41-28 halftime lead.  Full court pressure forced numerous turnovers from Germantown (6-7), and the Hawks dominated the offensive boards.

The Gryphons solved the Hawk press in the second half, and slowly inched their way back into the game.  They had the ball twice with the chance to take the lead, but both time the Hawk's defense forced errant shots.

James Shepherd led a balanced scoring attack with 15 pts., and Jason Stone added 13.  Tim Bowie made several clutch baskets down the stretch, when the outcome was in doubt.

Stevenson Grammont led Germantown in scoring with 20 pts.

The Hawks are off until next Friday, when they travel to Catonsville for a 5:00 PM game.  The CSM women will follow that game playing at Catonsville at 7:30 PM.  The Hawks return to the Hawk's Nest next Saturday, when they'll face Garrett at 8:00 PM.
