SKIPJACKS OUTLAST HAWKS

Wednesday, February 11 - After losing their last two home games by a total of three points, it looked like the Hawks would finally get a break through win, as they lead 10th ranked Chesapeake for the entire first half and part of the second half, before falling to the Skipjacks 93-82.

CSM (6-18, 3-13) jumped out front early, led by deadly shooting, especially from beyond the 3 point arch, where the Hawks sank 14 trays, nine in the first half.   Doug Cornwell, Robbie Briscoe, and Adam Halvorson all hit 3 pointers in the first half to pace the Hawks.  Brian Payne's two free throws gave CSM it's biggest lead of the game at 35-20 with 8:41 left in the first half.

Chesapeake (18-7, 12-5) switched to a 1-3-1 zone which gave the Hawks some trouble, and the Skipjacks were able to shave the lead to 49-42 at the half.

The second half was tight, with Chesapeake taking their first lead of the game at 57-56 on Cyril Djoukeng's three pointer with 15:00 left.  Minutes later David Kellstrom tipped in a rebound and the Hawks regained the lead at 61-59.  The lead continued to see-saw back and forth down the stretch.

Jerry Parker scored for the Hawks with 5:12 to cut the Chesapeake lead to 81-77 with 5:12 left in the game, but it was the last basket CSM would score until Doug Cornwell hit a three pointer with :41 left.  But it was too little too late, as Chesapeake had built a 93-80 lead by that time.  The five minute scoring drought proved costly, and Chesapeake escaped the upset with a 93-82 win.

ChiJioke Anyanwu led Chesapeake with 24 points, and Cyril Djoukeng added 11.

Adam Halvorson led the Hawks with 19 points, including five 3 pointers, Doug Cornwell had 13 (three 3 pointers), and Bryan Payne added 12 points.

This was the Hawks final home game, and sophomores Doug Cornwell, Bryan Payne, and Jerry Parker were honored before playing their last game in the Hawks Nest.

CSM will finish the regular season with two road games, playing at PG on Friday, and traveling to Garrett on Saturday night.
