HAWKS PLAY ALLEGANY TOUGH BEFORE
FALLING 87-72 Saturday, December 4 - The CSM men's basketball team gave the homecoming crowd a thrill, as they played well against a strong Allegany squad. The first half was close for the first twelve minutes, with CSM holding a four point lead at 8-4 with 14:02 left, and the Trojans claiming a 20-13 lead at the 8:25 mark. CSM turnovers against Allegany's half court trap, which led to fast break baskets, allowed Allegany (7-2, 2-1) to take a 44-26 halftime lead. Both teams started out cold in the second half, with only three baskets scored in the first 5:00 (two by CSM, one for Allegany). Finally CSM (2-7, 0-3) warmed up, and the Hawks outscored the Trojans 15-6 in the first ten minutes of the half. Zavior Cloyd's two free throws cut the margin to 50-41, but that was as close as the Hawks could get. Back to back turn around jumpers by Tyrone Beal inside pushed the margin back to 58-43, and CSM was unable to get any closer. Joe Flegler led all scorer's with 25 pts., Patrick Harper had 17, and Zavior Cloyd added 12 for the Hawks. Eric Bigby led Allegany with 19 pts., and Kenny Smith had 18. In the first game, the Lady Hawks fell behind 15-0 early, and were unable to recover. Sherrise Russell's free throw with 13:45 left in the half broke the ice for CSM (3-3, 0-2), and ignited a mini-run for the Hawks. CSM cut the margin to ten at 21-11 on Kia Stewart's three point play, but that was as close as they could get the rest of the night. Rockville (6-2, 1-1) scored the first eight points of the second half to dim the hopes of any CSM comeback. Marissa Richardson led the Knights with 48 pts., including seven 3 pointers, while Kia Stewart led the Hawks with 11 pts. and Kedra Frisby and Danielle Sturman both added 7 pts. The men will be in action Monday, Dec. 6 when they host Prince George's at 7:00 PM. The women begin a three game road trip Monday, playing at Howard (7:30 PM). |
