HAWKS SPLIT WITH ANNE ARUNDEL

December 7, 2005 - The CSM men's basketball team forced numerous turnovers with their pressure defense, as they jumped to an early lead and cruised to a 108-94 victory over Anne Arundel.  In the women's game, cold shooting hurt the Lady Hawks, as they fell behind early and were unable to recover and lost to Anne Arundel 65-52.

In the first game, the CSM women's shooting was ice cold as the weather, as they fell behind 11-3 in the first two minutes of the game, and were unable to cut into the Pioneer lead, trailing 29-21 at the half.

CSM (2-8, 1-2) rallied in the second half, as Christina Simms' two free throws cut the Pioneer lead to 31-29, with 16:52 left in the game.  However Anne Arundel (4-3, 2-0) outscored the Lady Hawks 23-9 over the next nine minutes,  putting the game out of reach.

Kalee Smith led the Hawk attack with 25 points, and Brittany Vines added 13.  Janae Butler led a balanced Anne Arundel attack with 19 pts., and Erika Tucker, Sierra Garrison, and Avis Ovoss each had 11 pts.

In the men's game, Anne Arundel jumped to an early 7-2 lead two minutes into the contest.  However the Hawks pressure defense forced four straight turnovers as CSM claimed the lead 11-7 with 16:31.  Anne Arundel (4-3, 2-1) was unable to handle the Hawks pressure defense, as CSM (2-7, 1-1) went on a 37-17 run.  Keith Wagner hit a three pointer, and followed with a dunk on the Hawks next possession to extend the lead to 41-22 with 5:00 minutes left in the first half.  The lead would eventually increase to 24 points, before Anne Arundel rallied to cut the margin to 48-32 at the half.

The Pioneers rallied early in the second half, and Glenn Dy's three pointer cut the Hawk lead to 66-58 with just over twelve minutes left in the game.  The Hawks bounced right back and regained control of the game, and the lead was never less then 12 points the rest of the game.

Michael Milstead was the game's leading scorer with 26 points, Keith Wagner had 24, Thomas Whinnett 16, and Marko Hamlin 13 to pace CSM.

Brandon Abney led the Pioneers with 19 pts., and Orland Powell had 16 for the Pioneers.

The CSM men will travel to Frederick on Saturday, before returning home to play in the CSM Christmas Classic on Dec. 16 and 17.

The women's team travels to Baltimore on Dec. 13, before joining the men in the CSM Christmas Classic Dec. 16 and 17.
