HAWKS FALL IN THRILLER TO CATONSVILLE
January 5, 2006 -
In a game where the lead changed back and
forth, and no team able to gain more then a five point advantage,
Catonsville was able to hold off the Hawks down the stretch for a 78-75 win.
Catonsville only scored one basket in the last 4:30 of the game, but the
Cardinals made 12 free throws down the stretch, and were 22-30 for the game
to hold on for the win.
Thomas Whinnett's 3-pointer tied the game at 69-69 with 2:33 left to play,
but Olaoye Omisore put the Cardinals back in front 71-69 with two free
throws. Another free throw by Justin Miles and a basket by Randy Allen
gave Catonsville a 74-69 lead with 1:26 left to play.
CSM's Tremain Davis hit two lay-ups sandwiched around another Catonsville
free throw to cut the lead to 75-73 with 40 seconds left to play.
Dane Matthews hit a free throw for Catonsville, but Michael Milstead hit two
free throws for the Hawks, and CSM trailed by just one 76-75 with 18.5
seconds left to play.
The door was left open for the Hawks when Michael Carter missed both free
throws, and the Hawks got the ball back with 14 seconds to play.
Tremain Davis drove to the basket, but his shot was blocked out of bounds.
CSM had one final chance, with the ball under their basket and 5 seconds
left, but the inbounds pass was intercepted by Catonsville. Two free
throws by Justin Miles provided the final 78-75 score.
CSM (3-10, 1-3) was led by Marko Hamlin's 20 points (16 in the second half),
15 from Thomas Whinett (5-3 pointers), Keith Wagner with 12, and Michael
Milstead and Tremain Davis both added 10 points.
Randy Allen had 21 for Catonsville (4-8, 2-3) and Frederick Brown added 18.
The Hawks travel to Howard on Saturday and Garrett on Wednesday, before
returning home on Saturday, January 14 to face Takoma Park.
