UNDERMANNED HAWKS TAKE CHESAPEAKE TO OVERTIME BEFORE FALLING 94-84

January 25, 2006 - With only five players dressed for the game, CSM battled back from an 18 point deficit before falling to Chesapeake in overtime.

After a very even first half, CSM (6-13, 4-6) found themselves trailing Chesapeake 36-31 at the break.  The Skipjacks steadily increased their lead in the second half. With 8:32 left in the game, Joe Fletcher's basket gave Chesapeake (11-3, 4-3) their biggest lead of the game, 65-47.

The Hawks outscored Chesapeake 24-6 over the next five and a half minutes, and Keith Wagner's lay-up tied the game at 71-71 with 3:17 to play.  With 2:39 left in the game and the score still tied, CSM's Marko Hamlin committed his fifth foul while battling for position on offense.  This forced the Hawks to play four against five the rest of the game.

Jamal Glenn scored to give Chesapeake a 73-71 lead, but Sean Ussery put back a missed shot to tie the game again at 73-73.  Anthony Stowe hit a free throw with :47.1 left to give CSM a 74-73 lead, but Rob Lowery scored with :37.4 to put the Skipjacks back in front 75-74.

CSM lost the ball out of bounds on their next possesion, forcing the Hawks to foul with :19.5 seconds left.  Mike Nichols went to the line for one and one, made the first shot but missed the second, giving the Hawks the ball down 76-74.  Playing four against five, Bruce Fort was still able to find an open seam and hit a 12 foot jump shot to tie the game at 76-76 and force overtime.

Playing another five minutes a man down proved to be too much for the Hawks, as Chesapeake slowly pulled away, outscoring CSM 18-8 in the extra period to escape with a 94-84 win.  CSM was forced to play three against five for the final :31.6, after Sean Ussery committed his fifth foul.

The game marked the return of Chesapeake Head Coach Dale Beecraft to CSM, where he served as an Assistant Coach in 2003-04 for the Hawks.  Skipjack forward Robbie Briscoe was also on that 2003-04 CSM team, and scored seven points in his return to the "Hawks Nest".

Keith Wagner had 31 pts. for the Hawks, Anthony Stowe had 23 pts., Marko Hamlin 13 pts., and Bruce Fort added 10 pts.

Jamal Glen scored 31 points for Chesapeake, and Rob Lowery added 24.

The Hawks next game will be against #7 Prince George's on Homecoming, Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 PM.
