HAWKS DEFEAT GERMANTOWN IN OVERTIME

Marko Hamlin hit a free throw to tie the game
at 75-75 with :17.3 left in regulation, then scored six of the Hawks ten
points in overtime to lead CSM to a 85-83 win over Montgomery-Germantown.
The first half was even, with Germantown (7-10, 2-6) hitting three
3-pointers to grab an early 9-4 lead. CSM (6-12, 4-5) stormed back,
and Anthony Stowe's basket gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game,
25-18, with 9:33 left in the first half. The Griffins closed the gap,
and Ulrich Bogne's basket with just four seconds left gave Germantown a
37-35 lead at halftime.
The Hawks came out flat to start the second half. After Germantown hit
two free throws after CSM was assessed a technical for grabbing the rim
during warm-ups, the Griffins went on a 13-4 run to grab a 50-39 lead.
Germantown's lead would increase to twelve points, before the Hawks battled
back. Trailing 55-43 with 14:56 left to play, CSM outscored Germantown
22-8 over the next five minutes. Keith Wagner's driving lay-up and
free throw gave the Hawks their first lead,65-63, since the first half.
The game remained close the final five minutes of regulation. With the
Hawks trailing 74-71, Marko Hamlin scored from inside to cut the Griffin
lead to 74-73 with 1:55 left. After defensive stops, the Hawks turned
the ball over on their next two possessions, before Ricky Marzett stole the
ball with :30 left to play, setting the stage for Hamlin's tying free throw.
In the overtime, Hamlin hit his second 3-pointer of the day to put CSM up
77-74. Germantown's Jacquez Lindsey answered with a basket to cut the
lead to 77-76. Keith Wagner hit another three pointer for the Hawks
and Sean Ussery followed his miss with a basket to put CSM ahead 82-77 with
1:22 left.
However back to back three pointers by Rodrigo Niets and Stetson Randolph
put Germantown ahead 83-82 with just :17 left to play. Marko Hamlin
came up big again for the Hawks, grabbing a missed shot and scoring in heavy
traffic to put CSM back in front 84-83. Hamlin was fouled on the play,
and his free throw put the Hawks ahead 85-83 with :5.7 left.
Germantown raced up court for one last try, but was unable to get a shot off
before the buzzer.
Marko Hamlin led all scorer's with 26 pts., Keith Wagner had 23, and Ricky
Marzett and Anthony Stowe both had 14 points to lead the Hawks. Malcom
Jay led Germantown with 22 points, and Mike Miller had 21.
The Hawks will be at home next week, facing Chesapeake and former CSM
Assistant Coach Dale Beecraft on Wednesday, and Prince George's on
Homecoming, Saturday, Jan. 28. Both games begin at 7:30 PM.
