HAWKS DEFEAT GERMANTOWN IN OVERTIME

January 21, 2006 - Marko Hamlin hit a free throw to tie the game at 75-75 with :17.3 left in regulation, then scored six of the Hawks ten points in overtime to lead CSM to a 85-83 win over Montgomery-Germantown.

The first half was even, with Germantown (7-10, 2-6) hitting three 3-pointers to grab an early 9-4 lead.  CSM (6-12, 4-5) stormed back, and Anthony Stowe's basket gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game, 25-18, with 9:33 left in the first half.  The Griffins closed the gap, and Ulrich Bogne's basket with just four seconds left gave Germantown a 37-35 lead at halftime.

The Hawks came out flat to start the second half.  After Germantown hit two free throws after CSM was assessed a technical for grabbing the rim during warm-ups, the Griffins went on a 13-4 run to grab a 50-39 lead.  Germantown's lead would increase to twelve points, before the Hawks battled back.  Trailing 55-43 with 14:56 left to play, CSM outscored Germantown 22-8 over the next five minutes.  Keith Wagner's driving lay-up and free throw gave the Hawks their first lead,65-63, since the first half.

The game remained close the final five minutes of regulation.  With the Hawks trailing 74-71, Marko Hamlin scored from inside to cut the Griffin lead to 74-73 with 1:55 left.  After defensive stops, the Hawks turned the ball over on their next two possessions, before Ricky Marzett stole the ball with :30 left to play, setting the stage for Hamlin's tying free throw.

In the overtime, Hamlin hit his second 3-pointer of the day to put CSM up 77-74.  Germantown's Jacquez Lindsey answered with a basket to cut the lead to 77-76.  Keith Wagner hit another three pointer for the Hawks and Sean Ussery followed his miss with a basket to put CSM ahead 82-77 with 1:22 left.

However back to back three pointers by Rodrigo Niets and Stetson Randolph put Germantown ahead 83-82 with just :17 left to play.  Marko Hamlin came up big again for the Hawks, grabbing a missed shot and scoring in heavy traffic to put CSM back in front 84-83.  Hamlin was fouled on the play, and his free throw put the Hawks ahead 85-83 with :5.7 left.  Germantown raced up court for one last try, but was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer.

Marko Hamlin led all scorer's with 26 pts., Keith Wagner had 23, and Ricky Marzett and Anthony Stowe both had 14 points to lead the Hawks.  Malcom Jay led Germantown with 22 points, and Mike Miller had 21.

The Hawks will be at home next week, facing Chesapeake and former CSM Assistant Coach Dale Beecraft on Wednesday, and Prince George's on Homecoming, Saturday, Jan. 28.  Both games begin at 7:30 PM.
