GARRETT PULLS AWAY AT END TO DEFEAT HAWKS
December 6, 2006 -
It was a close contest for most of the
evening, as the CSM men's basketball team battled Garrett in a MDJUCO game.
Neither team was able to take more then an eight point lead in the first
half, and the second half was even tighter, with three points the biggest
margin separating the teams. Raymond Smith hit a jumper to pull the
Hawks within one at 72-71 with 6:40 left to play, but the Lakers outscored
CSM 26-9 the rest of the way to win the game 98-80.
The game was a contrast in styles, as CSM (2-7, 0-2) relied on outside
shooting, shooting 9-17 from the three point arch and hitting outside
jumpers. The taller Lakers relied on their inside game, with a front
line of 6'9", 6'8", and 6'5", while the Hawks tallest player was only 6'4".
Still the Hawks were able to answer every Laker challenge, before faltering
down the stretch.
The Hawks also hurt themselves with poor free throw shooting, only making 17
of 40 (42.5%) from the charity stripe, while Garrett went 31-35 (88.5%)
Jordan Daisy led CSM with 28 points, Keith Wagner had 17, and Justin Jackson
added 15.
Chris Henderson led Garrett (6-2, 1-2) with 26 points, and Dale Taylor and
Daniel Conway added 15.
The Hawks travel to Anne Arundel on Saturday, and Baltimore on Tuesday
before returning home for the CSM Christmas Classic December 15 and 16.
