HAWKS DOWN SKIPJACKS - EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 7 Tuesday, October 1 - After a tight first half that found the Hawks only leading by a goal, CSM scored three times in the second half on the way to a 4-1 victory over Chesapeake. The win is the Hawks seventh in a row, as CSM is off to one of their best starts in years with a 9-1 record, and a perfect 7-0 in the conference. CSM got off to a sluggish start, and Chesapeake (4-5, 3-5) took the play to the Hawks for the first 20 minutes of the game. Olin Strauss scored on a fine feed from Wyatt Sagers at the 24:00 minute mark, and that seemed to wake CSM up. The Hawks begin to pepper the Skipjack goal, and had several quality chances, but the half ended with CSM up only 1-0. The Hawks continued to keep the ball in Skipjack territory in the second half. With 32:10 left, Brandon Catena fed Andrew Thompson, who broke in behind the Skipjack defense. Thompson dribbled around the diving Chesapeake goalie, and tapped the ball in to give CSM a 2-0 lead. Chesapeake cut the lead in half at 2-1 after Mike Howard scored on a penalty kick with 15:15 left. It was anyone's game for the next five minutes, until Scott Raley ended all doubt with two goals in the last ten minutes. Brandon Evans made a beautiful pass to the right wing, and Raley hit a perfect arching shot that slipped over the goalkeepers outstretched arms and into the back of the net. Robert Marino assisted on Raley's second goal, which slipped behind the defense into the net. Austin Flowers did a good job in goal replacing David Wood, who left with a shoulder injury after a collusion in front of the goal, early in the first half. Scott Wood did a masterful job at sweeper, directing the defense, and controlling the ball time after time to frustrate the Skipjack attack. The Hawks will play at Harford on Friday (3:30 PM) before returning home to face Cecil at 1:30 on Monday, October 7. |
