MEN AND WOMEN'S SOCCER WIN HOME OPENERS Tuesday, September 9 - The men and women's soccer teams opened the home season with resounding wins in a doubleheader played at CSM. The women's team trounced Cecil 10-2, while the men's team defeated Anne Arundel (2-3, 1-1) in the second game 3-0. The Lady Hawks dominated play against a depleted Seahawk team, playing with only 9 players, and jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first half. Heather Reed scored the first two goals, and Melanie Tyler, Tara Tomasello, Tabitha Jett, and Ana Jean all added one. In the second half, playing 9 on 9, CSM (1-0, 1-0) outscored Cecil 4-2 for the final 10-2 margin. Heather Reed added a goal to finish with three for the afternoon. Ana Jean added her second, as did Tabitha Jett, who also had two assists. Tara Tomasello also scored her second goal, and had an assist on the afternoon. Amy Conway also assisted on a goal for CSM. Allison Killian scored both second half goals for Cecil (0-2). In the men's game, CSM (1-1, 1-1) dominated play early, but was unable to find net. Wyatt Sager sent a rocket off the post ten minutes into the contest for the Hawk's best scoring chance. Finally, with 11:30 left in the first half, CSM broke through when J.D. Metcalf sent a beautiful cross to Scott Raley, who beat goalkeeper Steve Ridgeway to put the Hawks up 1-0. A key moment occurred with just a couple minutes left in the half, when Anne Arundel's Jason Smock got his second yellow card, forcing the Pioneers to play short handed the rest of the game. Playing with the man advantage in the second half, the Hawks buzzed around the Anne Arundel net, but were unable to get the insurance goal they needed to put the game away. Thirteen minutes into the final half the Hawks turned the ball over at midfield, and only a diving stop by Austin Flowers kept CSM in the lead. The Hawks regained control and continued to dominate play, as they out shot the Pioneers 15-1 in the second half, and 21-2 for the game. Finally with 25:00 minutes left Dave Yates hit the crossbar, and Scott Raley out jumped two Pioneers to head in the rebound and give CSM a 2-0 lead. With just over ten minutes left in the game Robbie Day scored the final Hawk goal with Colin Harriot getting the assist. The men will play a tough Rockville team on Thursday at Rockville, and return home next Monday to face Potomac State at 4:00 PM. The women are off until Sept. 16, when they will also travel to Rockville.
