HAWKS LOSE WILD SHOOT-OUT TO POTOMAC STATE

Monday, September 15 - On a hot, humid fall afternoon, Potomac State defeated CSM in a very physical, high scoring affair 4-3.  With 4:30 left in the game, Kwando Dash received a pass from Jonathan Braxton and broke in on goal alone to score the game winner for Potomac State and give the Catamounts a 4-3 win.  It was Dash's second goal of the game, as he tied the game at 2-2 earlier in the half on a feed from Corey Deal.

The game was very physical, with several yellow cards, numerous fouls, and other physical play that didn't draw a whistle.  In a very even first half, both teams had good scoring chances, but couldn't find the back of the net.  Potomac State (2-2) scored the only goal of the half when Joe Bean fed Chad Wood, who found net at the 20:00 mark.

With 9:30 left in the half the Catamounts Scott Kellner got his second yellow card when he was called for taking a dive, forcing Potomac State to play a man short the rest of the game.  CSM immediately took advantage in field position, but couldn't get the equalizing goal as they had the edge in shots 10-6, but trailed 1-0 at the half.

CSM (2-2, 2-1) continued to dominate play early in the second half, and finally got the equalizer with 36:40 left, when Chad Johnson broke down the right wing and sent a beautiful pass to Shawn Dixon, who tipped the ball in for a 1-1 tie.

Less then a minute later, Brandon Catena fed Scott Raley who broke in alone and put the Hawks up 2-1.

Dash's first goal tied it at 2-2 just two minutes later and Potomac State jumped back in front 3-2 when J.R. Benton scored on a break away at 28:06.

With just 8:00 left in the game the Hawks tied the game once again at 3-3 when Shawn Dixon scored his second goal of the day on a brilliant feed from J.D. Metcalf.

Both teams had scoring chances down the stretch.  With 15:00 left both J.D. Metcalf and Brandon Cantina had excellent shots on goal, and only some acrobatic saves from the Catamount goalkeeper Willis King kept CSM from tying the game earlier.

Earlier CSM net minder Austin Flowers made an outstanding save and Wyatt Sagers cleared the ball off a free kick to keep Potomac State at bay.

The Hawks had a couple late chances to tie the game one final time.  With 3:00 left, Shawn Dixon blasted a shot that King dove to block and the rebound came to Scott Raley in front of an open net, but his shot went wide.

The Hawks had one final chance on a free kick just outside the penalty box with just seconds left, but Hawks leading scorer Scott Raley just missed high on the final shot of the game.

The Hawks face two key conference road games this week, at Cecil on Wednesday and at Hagerstown on Friday before returning home on Tuesday, September 23 to face Frederick at 2:00 PM.
