DIXON'S LATE GOAL EARNS HAWKS TIE WITH CATONSVILLE

October 20, 2004 - Shawn Dixon's goal with :02 left in regulation tied the game, and after two scoreless overtimes, the CSM men's soccer team tied Catonsville 3-3.  With the Hawks trailing 3-2, and time running out, Shawn Dixon and Jusifu Barclay had a two on one break, with Barclay feeding Dixon on the left side, who beat the Catonsville keeper to tie the game, with just :02 left on the clock!

It was a cold day in the mid 50's with a light but persistant rain, but the action on the field was hot, as two of the best teams in the area faced off, with first place in the conference at stake.  After one of the best played games of the season, both teams shook hands after a very evenly played match that ended in a 3-3 tie.

The game was a study in contrast, as Catonsville (8-3-1) tried to control the ball and set up a steady attack on goal.  They were successful early, as they kept the ball in the CSM end for about 2/3's of the first half.

In contrast the Hawks used their speed to create breakaways and odd man attacks, with the ability to strike quickly.

All the scoring in the first half came under the 8:00 minute mark.  CSM (9-4-1, 7-1-1) scored first, when Randy Finch centered the ball off a direct kick to Jusifu Barclay, who found net to put the Hawks up 1-0.

The Cardinals came back with 4:00 left, when Tim Taylor's strong throw in found Ken Bolton in front of the net to even things at 1-1.

The scoring picked up in the second half.  The Cardinals broke in front at 2-1 when Hawk goalie Ben Chase lost control of the slippery ball in front of the net, and Bolton netted his second goal of the day.

The Hawks tied it up at 2-2 with 28:00 left.  Alie Kamain hit a free kick toward goal, David Yates took control and passed to Eddie Krupa who found net.

Catonsville took the lead back with 15:45 left, when Bolton added an assist to his two goals when he passed to Ciaroin Wessauier-Conlin who scored to put the Cardinals up 3-2.

That set up the last second heroics of Barclay and Dixon, with Barclay feeding Dixon for the tying goal with just :02 left on the clock.

Both goalies played outstanding, keeping their teams in the game, and their play continued in the two 10:00 sudden death overtimes.  CSM's Ben Chase kept the Hawks alive when he robbed Beltran of his third goal, stopping his hard shot from 15 yards out early in the second overtime.

Later in the second overtime, Alie Kenmain broke in alone on goal, but was foiled by a leaping stop by Cardinal keeper Andrew Simmons.

Usually teams are disappointed by a tie, but it seemed a fitting finish to this classic game.

The Hawks play another key MDJUCO game this Friday, when they host Frederick at 3:00 PM.
