HAWKS PERFECT IN MDJUCO
October 18, 2005 -
The CSM men's soccer team defeated Harford
4-1, to finish undefeated in MDJUCO play (9-0-1), and capture CSM's first
Maryland State Championship since 1996. David Mongey, Juele Lawrence,
Dario Paul, and Michael Mitchell each scored a goal to led the balanced
attack.
After Harford dominated play for the first five minutes of the game, the
Hawks begin press the attack, keeping the ball in the Harford end for a
majority of the rest of the 1st half. CSM had two great scoring
chances, the first when Dan Heaney beat his defender and broke down the
right side, but his shot went off the top post. With just over 20:00
left, Dario Paul was open in front of the net, and just missed when his
header went off the post.
CSM finally broke in front with 4:28 left, when Ben Waldmann sent a free
kick in front of the goal. The ball caromed off the Owl goalie and
came to David Mongey, who found net and put the Hawks up 1-0.
Harford's best chance came after a giveaway in front of the goal, but Josh
Kres' shot was right at Hawk keeper Michael Shifflett who made the save at
point blank range.
The second half was barely underway when the Hawks scored again. Dan
Heaney fed Juele Lawrence to put CSM ahead 2-0 just 28 seconds into the
half.
Harford made it a game, cutting the lead to 2-1, when Daniel Wilson out
fought everyone for the ball and scored from 18 yards out with 33:10 left in
the half.
The game remained tight, until Dario Paul broke free in front of the Harford
goal, and put the Hawks up 3-1 with 19:24 left. That proved to be the
turning point, as Harford's Joseph Copenhaver received two yellow cards for
language and was ejected, forcing the Owls to play a man short the rest of
the game.
Michael Mitchell put the icing on the cake for the Hawks, when he scored on
a breakaway with 15:42 left for the final 4-1 margin.
The win gives CSM the top seed in the Region XX Tournament which begins next
week. The Hawks improve to 14-1-1, while Harford falls to 3-7.
The Hawks will finish up the regular season on Thursday, when they host
Potomac State at 3:00 PM.
