HAWKS HOLD OFF P.G. FOR 1-0 WIN

September 21, 2005 - Despite playing the last 13:57 shorthanded, the CSM men's soccer team made an early goal by Dario Paul stand up, as the Hawks blanked Prince George's 1-0.

After the Owls had pressed the attack for the first six minutes of the game, CSM scored on a counter attack, when Daniel Heaney fed Dario Paul, who broke past the Prince George's defense and scored the only goal of the game.

CSM (7-1-1, 3-0-1) had another scoring chance five minutes later, when P.G. goalie Felix Blanco received a yellow card and had to leave the game, but the Hawks were unable to test the back-up goalie as the shot off the free kick went wide.

Prince George's had their best scoring chance of the half with 16:07 left, when Greg McGriff broke free on the left side, but his shot from 15 yards out went wide.

The Owls had the advantage of territory in the half, but the Hawks had more quality scoring chances, out shooting P.G. 4-2.

In the second half, it was the Hawks who dominated play, spending the majority of time in the Owls half of the field, but were unable to find net.

A key moment came with 19:00, when Hawk goalkeeper Mike Shifflett unsuccessfully  tried to clear the ball during a wild scramble in front of the CSM net.  With the goal open, David Hupp was able to clear the ball, and the Hawks clung to their 1-0 lead.

With 13:57 Daniel Heaney got his second yellow card, forcing the Hawks to play a man short the remainder of the game.  However the defense rose to the challenge, and Prince George's (2-3, 1-2) was unable to get any shots on net, and the Hawks were able to counter attack several times, keeping the ball away from the CSM goal.

It was goalkeeper Mike Shifflett's third shutout of the young season.

The Hawks will travel to Frederick and Cecil next, before returning home to face Anne Arundel on September 29 at 3:30 PM.
