MEN'S SOCCER BLANKS CECIL

September 27, 2006 - The CSM men's soccer team shutout Cecil 4-0 in a MDJUCO game played at the College of Southern Maryland.  Brandon Gross tallied two goals, and Guil Costa and Justin Daniels also found the back of the net.  A.J. Sweeney had two assists, while Dan Funk and Mike Carnucci had one assist each.

Justin Daniels opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, receiving a brilliant pass in front of the goal from Dan Funk, and then beat diving Seahawk goalkeeper Jared Price to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead with 39:31 left in the first half.

Brandon Gross added the next two goals for CSM (8-2, 4-0) to put the Hawks up 3-0.  On the first goal, Gross received a long pass on the right side from A.J. Sweeney, eluded two Cecil defenders and found the back of the net from 8 yards out with 25:24 left.  Just four minutes later the fourth leading scorer in the country struck again, as Mike Carnucci hit Gross with a long pass and Brandon threaded his way through the Seahawk defense to score with 21:42 left in the half.

Guil Costa scored the final Hawk goal with 9:51 left.  Costa, eighth in the country in scoring, received a long pass from A.J. Sweeney and outraced the Cecil defenders to put CSM in front 4-0.

There was no scoring in the second half, as the Hawks outshot Cecil (1-3) 7-2 for the game.  The stout CSM defense helped Dominque Washington, and Bobby Slater, who played the final 20 minutes, earn a shut-out.

CSM will play at Rockville tomorrow for a key MDJUCO game, and then travel to North Carolina this weekend to face Cape Fear and #12 Louisburg.  The Hawks next home game will be Sunday, Oct. 15 when they face Essex (NJ) at noon.
