HAWKS DEFEAT ROCKVILLE FOR 5th WIN IN A ROW

October 4, 2007 - The CSM men's soccer team defeated Rockville 3-1 on a hot, humid afternoon, to claim their fifth win in a row.  The team improves to 10-3 overall, and solidifies their grasp on second place in the conference with a 8-1 record in MDJUCO play.

CSM had the advantage in play in the first half, outshooting the Knights 8-4 in the half.  Both teams had two quality scoring chances.  For the Hawks, Marco Gaudio fed Brandon Gross who was open on the left side, but his shot went off the post.  Later in the half Gross stole the ball and broke in on goal, but was foiled by a diving save by the Rockville goalkeeper.

Ridwan Raji had two good scoring chances for the Knights.  With CSM goalkeeper Bobby Slater down, he fired a shot but Abdoulayu Kaba made an outstanding clear to keep the game scoreless.  Later Kaba broke in on goal, but his shot went off the post.

Marco Gaudio opened the scoring for the Hawks with 11:14 to play in the half with a beautiful shot from 29 yards out that beat Rockville keeper Frank Fregoso, to give CSM a 1-0 lead.

Rockville (9-4-1, 7-2) tied the game up with 4:25 to play in the half when Ridwan Raji hit a high arching shot that CSM goalkeeper Bobby got his hands on but couldn't control, and the game remained tied at the half 1-1.

After ten minutes of play in the second half, the Hawks regained the lead when Jason McCann made an outstanding throw in to the front of the Rockville goal, and Brandon Gross was able to head the ball in after a wild scramble in front of the Rockville goal, putting CSM up 2-1.

CSM got an insurance goal with 11:27 to play when Guil Costa eluded several defenders and fed Brandon Gross breaking to the goal for the final 3-1 margin.

John Mueller, playing the second half in goal, kept Rockville off the board in the final minutes making a diving save to foil Mammadou Diatta who had broken in on goal.

The Hawks travel to Howard on Tuesday, before returning home on Thursday, October 11 to face Takoma Park (3:00 PM).
